Stephen doesn’t regret marrying Lucy.

It definitely brings questions from the press. A man in his fifties married to a fourteen year old girl, how scandalous can you get? But Stephen has always been a believer that someone’s private affairs don’t suddenly become public business once they’re famous, and he shoos off reporters time after time.

He certainly never regrets rescuing Lucy from the life the mafia had planned for her. He owes so much to her that he could never live with himself, knowing what had happened to the one who gave him hope and a life again, who never deserved that kind of fate. If marriage was the way to help her, marriage it would be.

Their relationship, in truth, isn’t romantic. It certainly isn’t sexual: the most they have ever done is a chaste kiss, the kind that in France you might receive from a complete stranger. But it is an extremely close relationship, and there are certain benefits to being married to someone you’re so close to.

They are checking out the trail set for the Steel Ball Run when they stop in Chicago. It is bitterly cold, and will likely be as cold for the racers next year. Unlike them, Stephen and Lucy are not on a time limit, and can afford to stay in a fine hotel for the night.

They choose a room with two beds. The clerk at the front desk gives them a funny look for it, but doesn’t bring up their splurging of money on an extra bed. It isn’t his job to save them money at the hotel’s expense.

Lucy slips under the covers of one bed as soon as she’s done getting ready for sleep. “That’s much better, but… It’s still a little cold.”

Stephen shakes his head, shivering a little. “It will have to do. I’m sure this is as warm as the hotel can make the rooms.”

“If we share a bed, it’ll be warmer.” At Stephen’s surprised expression, Lucy brings her hand to her mouth to cover her laugh. “Are you serious? I’m your wife. Come here and sleep with me. Even if people knew, they wouldn’t have anything to complain about.”

She is his wife. Stephen has to admit she has a point, and what others think of them is far less important to him right now than making sure she’s comfortable. Still mostly dressed, he crawls into bed with her. She’s warmer than the chill air of Chicago, even in the hotel, and much more pleasant to have curled against his chest.

Tomorrow they will move on from Chicago to warmer climates again. They probably won’t even bring this up, and why should they? They’re married to each other, they have the right to share a bed in any weather. They have sworn the vows to love each other and protect each other, and even though they meant love in a different way from the priest, they meant those vows all the same.
