Summary: It rains in Egypt.
Notes: CCB square "umbrella-sharing".
It rains in Egypt, if only rarely. The northern coastal parts can get up to eight inches of rain a year, while most of the rest of the country is lucky to get three inches on average.
Today, however, it’s raining, and unusually hard. Polnareff huddles with the others underneath the small dry area afforded to them by a shop’s awning, searching through his luggage for an umbrella.
“What kind of convenience store doesn’t sell umbrellas?” asks Jotaro. They’d already tried three stores for one, with no luck.
“What would be the point of selling them in Egypt? The rain doesn’t come often enough for them to be profitable,” says Joseph. “It’s not like Japan, where there’s umbrella stands everywhere you look.”
“Found it!” Polnareff pulls out his umbrella with a triumphant look on his face. “I knew it was a good idea to pack this. It may not be the sturdiest, but I’m sure it’ll work for me and one other guy if we’re close together. Who wants to share?”
Nobody speaks up. Jotaro grumbles wordlessly, Kakyoin fidgets with his sunglasses, and Joseph and Avdol look a bit confused.
Polnareff raises an eyebrow. “Nobody wants to get out of the rain? Come on, we haven’t got all day.”
“I’m used to rain,” says Joseph. “I was a kid in the wetter parts of England before I moved to the States.”
“It’s refreshing to be caught in the rain once in a long time,” Avdol says. “What about you two?”
Jotaro and Kakyoin look at each other. Kakyoin sighs. “I’ll share. It’s not as though it’s important.”
Confused, Polnareff puts up the umbrella and steps out from under the awning. Kakyoin joins him. The umbrella isn’t particularly big, and to keep dry, he has to stand very close to Polnareff. That shouldn’t be a problem, because they’re good friends. Is that what Kakyoin was worried about?
As they start to walk, they nearly step on Iggy, who has no compulsions whatsoever about sharing umbrellas with humans. Coordinating their walk is harder with a dog underneath the umbrella as well, but somehow they manage.
The other three follow close behind, getting rained on.
“Is this really better than sharing an umbrella?” Joseph asks Jotaro, who is trying to wring some of the water out of his hat.
Jotaro doesn’t hesitate. “Yes. It’s better.” He puts his still-wet hat back on his head
By the time they reach their hotel for the night, they’re utterly soaked. Polnareff folds up the umbrella and Kakyoin falls back to talk to Jotaro as Avdol speaks to the clerk about getting rooms.
“It’s not that embarrassing,” says Kakyoin. “If the rain keeps up tomorrow, you should be the one under the umbrella.”
Jotaro scowls. “I’m not sharing.”
Kakyoin sighs, this time in a mixture of exasperation and fondness. “Jotaro, we’re in Egypt, and it’s with Polnareff. No one is going to think anything is going on.”
Jotaro keeps grumbling.
The next day is dry enough to preserve everyone’s dignity.
