Doppio doesn’t understand it.

Diavolo is a strong man. He doesn’t let anyone push him around. He knows exactly what he wants in life, knows how to get there, and knows how to shut down anyone in his way. He’s a person Doppio admires for how unshakeable he is, and yet-

When it comes to Giorno Giovanna, Diavolo is terrified. All of that strength is gone, leaving only a man who would do anything not to be in the same room as him. Doppio has held Diavolo’s hair back for him while he vomited into a toilet, after having to speak to Giorno in person. It doesn’t make any sense. Giorno is only a young man, hardly dangerous or someone to be frightened of.

And yet, he scares Diavolo down to his core. Doppio doesn’t like him, but mostly that’s because Diavolo doesn’t like him, not because he can find any particular character flaws or because he finds him intimidating himself.

So Doppio does what anyone would do in this situation. He does a detailed background check.

What he comes up with is inconclusive. He already knows that Giorno is relatively new to the organization. He knows where he lives, and his phone number. He doesn’t seem to have any living relatives… or relatives at all, judging by his search through obituaries.

Hm. Doppio considers this, then calls in the big guns.

“Why should I do this for you?” Risotto asks over the phone. Risotto is not a particularly close friend, but someone he knows through someone else, and he knows Risotto is in the private investigation business with a handful of associates.

“Doesn’t it seem suspicious? It’s interesting, right?” asks Doppio. “Anyway, I’ve already asked Diavolo, and he says he doesn’t know anything. You’re my next best hope.”

“It is interesting,” Risotto says. “But you’re still going to need to pay standard rates.”

“Fine. I’ll write you a check.”

Three weeks later, Risotto comes back with findings, which he lays out on his desk in front of Doppio. “As far as I can determine, Giorno Giovanna popped into existence as he is now. He got himself an ID, opened a bank account, bought a house, picked up a motorcycle, bought a gun, these in the same couple of months. Before that, there’s no record of him whatsoever, and there’s no record of him having any family.”

Doppio squints, looking through files. “People don’t just suddenly appear out of nowhere. It just doesn’t happen.”

“Right, so you’re probably looking at somebody with a severe case of paranoia who wants to erase all past traces of themselves.” Risotto leans back in his chair. “That’s the most I can do for you in the short term. I could try to dig up more, but it would take some time, and that means-”

“More money. I got it.” Doppio sighs and fishes out his checkbook. “Maybe Diavolo just has a better sense of who’s suspicious than the rest of us.”

When Doppio returns home, he reports what he’s found to Diavolo, who shakes his head. “That isn’t the reason.”

“Then what’s the reason?” asks Doppio, folding his arms. “You said you didn’t know anything.”

“I don’t know anything for certain, and that’s what I told you, but.” Diavolo hesitates. “What I feel around him isn’t suspicion. It’s that I’ll surely be killed if I take a wrong step.”

Doppio uncrosses his arms and throws them around Diavolo, who relaxes only an infinitesimal amount. “You won’t be killed. I’ll protect you.”

It seems a strange conversation to have, but Doppio means every word. Whatever secrets Giorno Giovanna is hiding, he won’t lay a hand on his boss, no matter what Doppio needs to do.
