Summary: Cherryblod is as shrimp as shrimp can be, and as such is subject to part of the life cycle where sex is changed.
Notes: I am not making this up about shrimp disclaimer. I knew there was a reason Cherryblod was my favorite.
Cherryblod feels… strange this morning, as soon as he wakes up. Slightly lighter, but he’s not sure where. He tries to pin down the feeling: that incident with the poison has made him extra careful about strange sensations. He doesn’t understand it, though, until he gets out of bed and glances downward and everything clicks.
“...Oh. Isn’t that something.”
Cherryblod crawls back into bed with Doloz underneath the blanket. He places soft kisses all over her face until she stirs.
“Mmm…” Doloz stretches her pincers out carefully as she yawns. “Good morning, honey.”
“Good morning. How did you sleep?” he asks. He tries not to let any hesitation show in his voice, but Doloz knows him too well, as she frowns.
“Soundly, but what about you? Is everything okay?” she asks, worry obviously settling in quickly. “Did you have a nightmare?”
“I can’t hide a thing from you,” says Cherryblod, smiling. “...Remember, when I said I had gone so long without switching over that it probably would never happen to me?” Doloz nods, and he lifts the blanket. “Well, surprise.”
“Oh my!” Doloz gets a good look before saying, “Do you feel any different?”
“Just physically. But when my mother and my mama talked about the switch, they both said the mental changes took some time, so… This will be an interesting couple of months, won’t it?” he asks. “And we’ll have something to tell Lobco when she gets back.”
“Soo that’s whaat happened?” asks Pulmo.
Cherryblod nods. “Please don’t spread it around, I’m not ready to go public yet.”
“Oof course!” She grins. “Ii’m suure I caan find soome dresses iin your siize. Nice oones, too! Yoou’re still muuch taller thaan me, buut I haave ways.”
Indeed, Cherryblod towers over Pulmo. “I’m sorry, I just didn’t know who else I could ask.”
She waves a hand, dismissive. “You caame to the riight jellyfish.”
Cherryblod does a spin in front of the mirror, examining himself in Pulmo’s dress.
It’s a lovely dress, black and burgundy, and he could easily see it at a party. He could even see himself wearing it to the right sort of party, it looks good on him. But…
“It doesn’t fit,” he says at last. “I can wear dresses and look good in them, I’ve done it before, but I don’t feel right in them.”
“You don’t have to, honey,” says Doloz. “Your grandfather wouldn’t touch a skirt until the day he died.”
“He liked to call himself a man’s man,” says Cherryblod, “whatever that means.” His brief smile at his grandfather’s mention fades. “But, I don’t feel quite the same as I did before. I don’t feel exactly like a woman either. What does that make me?”
“You’ll figure something out someday,” says Doloz, holding out a pincer. “And even if you don’t… You’ll always be the same wonderful shrimp I married.”
Cherryblod rests his hand on her pincer. “You always know just what to say.”
“Father, Mother, I’m home!” Lobco calls out as she opens the door.
“Welcome back!” Doloz sweeps her up into a hug first, letting go only as she starts squeaking about being crushed.
“Welcome back,” says Cherryblod. He gives her a far more gentle hug, and kisses her on the head. “We’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too,” says Lobco. “Did anything happen while I was away?”
Doloz and Cherryblod look at each other, and Doloz starts, “Well, you see…”
Lobco’s eyes go wide. “Something happened? Is everything okay? Has Father had a relapse?” She holds Cherryblod’s hands tightly.
“Nothing like that,” he says. “It’s just- how much have I told you about shrimp life cycles?”
“Well, let’s see…” Lobco thinks for a moment. “They lay eggs, which hatch into larvae, which become male adults, which after reproducing a bit become female adults-”
“That part.” Cherryblod says, “I was going to wait until you had settled in before telling you, but I guess this is alright.”
Lobco stares, still processing. “I… have two mothers?”
“For now, please keep thinking of me as your father,” says Cherryblod. “I’m not sure where I stand on everything myself.”
“...Father.” Lobco clears her throat. “I just want you to know that I love you very much, and no matter what you do or wear or feel like… you and mother are always going to be the most important to me.”
“That’s my girl.” Cherryblod kisses the top of her head again, then can’t help but go on. “So I guess that means you didn’t find a nice lobster while you were away?”
“Wh-wh- no!”
“No shrimp either, dear?” asks Doloz.
“No, no, no! I’m going to my room!”
