Between jobs, Ver visits Wadanohara’s sea.

It’s peaceful now, and the people who live their appreciate their quiet lives much more for nearly having lost them. Laurentia, when she stops by, usually has tea with Cherryblod and Doloz, and Vendetto is learning the ins-and-outs of underwater fishing. Ver knows the people of the town in passing, but every trip she makes, Ver’s first destination is always the same.

Wadanohara answers the knock on her door and smiles brightly. “You should’ve told me you were coming, Ver!”

“Was kind of spur of the moment,” Ver says. “My last job took me out this way, so I thought I might as well drop in.”

“You always say you ‘might as well’,” says Wadanohara. “Come in, everyone else is out right now.”

Ver steps inside. She’s a bit relieved to hear her familiars are away: she and Dolphi get along alright now that she’s learned to tread gently, and Memoca has mostly forgiven her for fighting them before, but Fukami will never like her. She doesn’t blame him.

The other reason she’s glad the familiars are out is because it makes it more convenient to lean down and kiss Wadanohara’s lips.

If she’s going to be completely honest with herself, she’s liked Wadanohara basically since they became friends. Even back then, though, her shark familiar had been obviously crushing on her, and if Wadanohara was too oblivious to notice that, there was no way Ver had a chance.

Their meeting during the Tosatsu invasion obviously hadn’t left much time for confessions, and after that…

Samekichi is gone. Wadanohara believes he’ll come back, and Ver believes it too, because Wadanohara is usually right about having faith in people. She had faith in Ver, and the least Ver can do to repay that is believe in Samekichi’s survival.

Still, it has been a very long time, and everyone gets lonely. And Fukami, talented as hugs as he is, is a ‘me and no one else’ kind of person. Ver’s not.

She might be more mature now, but Wadanohara’s still short enough that kissing’s easier when they’re sitting down, and still blushes a little when Ver teases her. She’s still cute enough to make Ver’s heart warm, and she still is liberal with the hugs and the holding of hands. She’s still Wadanohara, even despite everything she’s been through. And Ver wouldn’t have her any other way.

Though the ocean’s always a little chillier than Ver’s home, Wadanohara’s bed is always warm when it has her in it.

Ver’s visit this time has to be short, since she has another job lined up after this one. It’s never a wasted trip even if it only lasts for one day, if she gets a chance to see Wadanohara smile when she waves her goodbye.

It’s shortly after that trip that she receives a letter in Wadanohara’s handwriting. It’s long and rambling, full of excitement, but the gist of it is that Samekichi is back and he’s alright.

Ver starts to write a reply, then crumples the unfinished letter into a ball and tosses it into the trash.

For a congratulations of this measure, you need to visit.
