“These guys aren’t tough at all, seriously.” Ver skewers another flaming bat on her claws. “They’ve got numbers, but that’s all they’ve got going for them. And do they know any strategy besides trying to set everything on fire?”

“Indeed, it’s an easy job. The locals hardly need our help~” Laurentia hums for a moment before turning to Vendetto. “You’ve been awfully quiet. Is something the matter?”

“...Just seems familiar.” Vendetto scowls and sticks another bat on his spear. “Hope we don’t run into anybody I know.”

Just as he says that, two demons not dressed identically to all the others appear on the scene.

The first takes a glance over the carnage and fidgets with his sunglasses. “Eff, we’re getting our asses beat…”

The other, an apparently young girl, fixes her gaze on someone else. “Big bro!!”

Everyone immediately turns to stare at Vendetto as the girl races towards him. Vendetto doesn’t stop her, just lets her cling to his legs and cry. “Hey, lil’ sis.”

Ver and Laurentia glance at each other before Ver folds her arms. “You know her?” she asks.

“Uh.” Vendetto pets the girl’s hair with one hand. “Ver, Laurentia, this is my sis Poemi. Sis, this are my friends, Ver and Laurentia.”

“Pleased to meet you~” says Laurentia, curtsying.

Poemi looks up and sniffles. “Hi…” She turns her attention back to Vendetto. “Big bro, why’d you run away from home?”

“Uh-”

“Poemi missed you! Missed you so much!” Tears stream from her eyes. “Why’d you have to leave? D-did you run away from Poemi?”

“I didn’t-” Vendetto sweats. “It’s not because of you, sis. I missed you, I promise.”

The remaining demon clears his throat. “So, uh… You’re Mr. Ivlis’s kid?”

“Yeah. And you’re his henchman or something?” asks Vendetto.

Poemi giggles. “Emalf got demoted from henchman for failing too much. Now he’s sub-henchman.”

“What’s under sub-henchman?” Ver asks, raising an eyebrow.

Emalf grumbles something indistinguishable.

“What Emalf meant to say,” calls a suddenly-appearing woman, “was ‘disposable’. Which he will be if he allows distractions to- Poemi, what are you doing?”

“Big bro came back!” Poemi says. “Rieta, it’s so great! Won’t Daddy be so happy?”

“No way,” says Vendetto. “I’m not talking to him.”

“That’s too bad, because Lord Ivlis is almost here.” Rieta frowns. “I was hoping you two would have some progress to show, but it seems that three demons have stopped you in your tracks…”

“But, but! Poemi can’t hurt big bro!” Poemi pouts. “And if Emalf hurts big bro Poemi will make him her next toy!”

“Really don’t want to be her effin’ toy,” says Emalf, shuddering. “Sorry, Rieta.”

“Hm, I see.” Rieta taps her chin thoughtfully. “Then it seems that there’s nothing to be done but wait for Lord Ivlis’s arrival. He will know what to do with you.”

“I’m gettin’ out of here,” says Vendetto. He tries to exit, but Poemi is clinging to him and weighing him down. “Sis, I gotta go, get off.”

“Nooo, not when you just came back! Don’t go don’t go don’t go!” Poemi hangs onto him tightly. “Daddy missed you too, please stay!”

“Sis, please, I can’t talk to-” As the flap of wings reaches his ears, Vendetto swears under his breath.

“Cursing’s not nice,” says Poemi. She turns to look behind her. “Right, Daddy?”

Ivlis folds his arms across his chest. “Well. Isn’t this a surprise? I was wondering if you’d died somewhere.”

As Poemi finally lets go of him and backs away, Vendetto scowls. “Can’t say I was planning on ever seeing you again.”

“So that’s your dad…” Ver leans to whisper in Vendetto’s ear. “If it gets to a fight, we’ve got your back.”

“I know, thanks.” Vendetto raises his voice. “So is this what you do for fun these days? Just invade random worlds?”

“Not random. There’s supposedly a very powerful spear here in the palace here, and I want it.” Ivlis smirks. “Does it matter?”

“Actually it kinda does.” Vendetto grips his spear more tightly. “See, I’m a mercenary. It’s my job. And I’ve been hired here to make sure the invaders, which are you and your cronies, go away.”

Ivlis snorts. “You wouldn’t possibly kill me for money. You’re not ruthless enough.”

“You’re right,” says Vendetto, “I wouldn’t. But I know you, and you’ll run away if I beat you up enough, so I don’t have to kill you. Lucky me.”

Ivlis drops his smirk. “Rieta, Emalf.”

“Yes, Lord Ivlis?”

“Uh, yeah, Mr. Ivlis?”

“Crush the other two, but don’t kill my son. You can injure him all you want as long as he’s still alive.”

“As you command,” says Rieta.

“That’s kinda more merciless than just killing him,” says Emalf. When glared at, he gulps. “I get it. Don’t kill him.”

“Poemi,” says Ivlis. Poemi is starting to sniffle again, and Ivlis sighs. “Poemi, why don’t you go wipe out everyone else here? For stress relief.”

“...Okay, Daddy.” Still teary-eyed, Poemi heads off in the direction of the palace.

Vendetto watches her go, then turns back to Ivlis. “That’s lucky for me too. Didn’t want to hurt her. Hurting you, I’m just fine with.” He readies his spear. “You ready?”

“On your mark, Vendetto,” says Ver.

Ivlis frowns. “Vendetto? What’s wrong with the name I gave you?”

“It sucks. Probably ‘cause you came up with it. Let’s get started!”
