Summary: Idate becomes a familiar. Almost everybody suffers.
Notes: This was inspired by the comics of hydrangeamaiden on Tumblr! So credit where credit's due.
Idate had been starving, and he’d made a mistake because of it.
He’d been so hungry that he had been willing to take on a group of sharks, healthy sharks, to get a bite out of one of them. Groups of adult sharks were more trouble than they were worth, especially hunting alone. They’d defended themselves and Idate had ended up with plenty of broken bones and bloody bruises.
“Is this it?” he wondered aloud, watching his blood permeate the nearby water. “What a way to go, done in by sharks…”
“Um, excuse me! Are you alright?”
The voice belonged to a young girl, holding on to her hat as she rose to the surface on top of a shark. Idate licked his lips as she came closer.
“Hold still, I’m going to heal you, okay?” she said, coming right up next to him.
A witch then. “Have at.” At this point survival was more important than his continued hunger.
Healing magic came to her fingertips and she pressed them against his wounds. They closed only a little, bleeding slowing a bit but not stopping. She frowned. “Um… This works a lot better with my familiars, I’m sorry.”
“Eh, it’s better than nothing.” Maybe he should eat her anyway.
She thought a moment more. “Oh, I know! If you became my familiar, I’d be able to heal you right up.”
Now that was an interesting proposition he’d honestly never considered. Being a familiar… It didn’t appeal to him, but neither did bleeding out. “Would I still get to come and go whenever I want?” he asked.
“If you want to,” she said. The shark under her grumbled.
He hummed, thinking, then grinned. “Alright then. Familiarize me.”
The process was quick, and true to her word her healing magic worked considerably better on her own familiars. “I’m Wadanohara,” she said as he poked himself to make sure everything was healed up. “This is Samekichi. ...Um, what’s your name?”
“You can call me an orca on a stroll,” he answered.
“Some stroll,” said Samekichi with a snort.
“Wadanohara, I don’t get to eat him, do I? Because I admit, I love bullying sharks…”
She squeaked. “You can’t eat Samekichi! Let’s… let’s find you something else to eat…”
After finding some seals foolish enough to pick a fight, Idate parted ways from her again.
“Please don’t smoke inside! Again...”
“You can’t hurt Samekichi like that! Stop right now!!”
“You’re so mean…!”
All he would do was smoke a cigarette and grin.
Fukami stared at him as he went to leave again. “...You are the worst familiar in the sea.”
He found her and her troupe at the exit of the Sea of Death. “Well, looks like you’ve gotten yourself into some trouble,” he said. “Mind if I join up?”
The others looked at him with wary eyes, but Dolphi was the first to speak up. “We… we need help.”
“I bet you do.” So Idate fell in line as they continued to swim, not minding Samekichi and Fukami’s glares when they thought he wasn’t looking.
Sal was unfortunate even for a shark, and his presence caused Wadanohara to freeze for a moment before falling backwards into Samekichi’s arms.
“Hey, Wadanohara.” Idate spoke in a low, calm tone. “I can eat him now, right?”
She mumbled something he couldn’t pick up even from right next to her, but Memoca ‘translated’ for him: “Kick his butt.”
“That’s what I like to hear.” Idate smiled wide, and without further pause, nicked Wadanohara’s hand with his sharp teeth.
There were only a few drops of blood which he licked away. But it was enough that when he turned back to Sal, he was quivering in the face of Idate’s grin.
Idate might have been the worst familiar to ever grace the sea, but two things he knew for sure:
He did not like sharks.
He did not like anyone who hurt Wadanohara.
“You’re going to be delicious.”
