Summary: "We’re just incredibly sad all of a sudden now that we’ve reached these graves. Who were Lost and Ciel?"
Notes: I like these pairings.
How did Grora lose those the two girls she was looking after so easily? It wasn’t even Yosafire she was supposed to be keeping track of: it was Dialo and Chelan, who had requested to be allowed to explore some of the further areas of their world and had been permitted to go with an escort. Those two weren’t known for running off wildly.
It had been seeing the graveyard that distracted her long enough to lose sight of the girls.
“If I was two girls exploring, where would I go… Probably not the gr-”
An unfamiliar sound reached her ears from deeper in the graveyard, the sound of a girl crying. Grora struggled to identify the voice as she headed towards it, only able to place it upon spotting the source.
Chelan had always cried loudly, on the rare occasions she cried at all. Tears flowed from her face as she sat next to a gravestone and sobbed. Dialo held her tightly, and as Grora approached she could see that she too was crying, much more quietly.
Grora didn’t need to look at the gravestones to remember who was buried here.
Dialo turned to Grora as she knelt beside them. “I-I don’t understand… We’re just incredibly sad all of a sudden now that we’ve reached these graves. Who were Lost and Ciel?”
“That’s probably something you should ask Etihw and Kcalb. C’mon, let’s go home.” Grora patted Chelan on the shoulder, who clung tighter to Dialo in response.
“She’s right, we should return home.” Dialo wiped her face with one hand, then brushed some of Chelan’s tears away. “You don’t need to worry about a thing like that, Chelan. I promise you I’m not leaving you alone.”
Chelan sniffled and rose to her feet, pulling Dialo up with her, and together they returned home.
After they returned to Blancblack Castle, Dialo and Chelan immediately started for Etihw and Kcalb’s hall, with Grora trailing behind. When two girls pushed open the doors, Kcalb and Etihw were in the room, as always.
“Oh, you’re back. How was your trip?” Etihw smiled brightly down at them.
Grora cleared her throat. “Actually-”
“Chelan and I have a question.” Dialo stared up at them, most of the redness gone from her eyes. “Who were Lost and Ciel?”
The smile disappeared from Etihw’s face, while Kcalb jolted, just barely noticeably. “Ah. Why do you ask?” asked Etihw.
“We started crying for no apparent reason when we reached their graves,” Dialo said. “It’s not normal for either of us to do that. And Grora said to ask you.”
“I figured it wasn’t my place to explain,” said Grora. “If anybody can talk about it…”
“I understand.” Etihw was silent for a few moments. “...You’ve learned already that angels and demons were once at war with each other.”
Both Chelan and Dialo nodded.
“In that war… many demons and angels died. A small few of them reincarnated, and were reborn as you and your friends.” A far-away quality came into Etihw’s voice. “Dialo, your ancestor Lost, and Chelan, your ancestor Ciel… you resemble each other in many ways, but both of you are your own person.”
Dialo slipped her hand into Chelan’s. “What were they like?”
“Ciel was originally a very joyous person, full of hope and love for those around her, but the war tired her so much that by the end of her life she rarely smiled. As for Lost, I didn’t know him well.” Etihw looked to Kcalb.
“...He didn’t talk much and he was usually angry. The only person who made him happy was Ciel.” Kcalb shut his eyes. “If… there was any way to make up for-”
“Kcalb.” Dialo spoke crossly, matched by Chelan’s narrowed eyes next to her. “Chelan says that she doesn’t want you to treat us differently because of what happened to our past selves. We are who we are in this life, and if you want to be kind to us, do it because we deserve it, not out of pity for Lost and Ciel.”
“...Right.”
Etihw floated down from their seat in order to stand in front of Dialo and Chelan. “You’re both wonderful girls on your own merits, and I love you for who you are.”
Chelan brightened up instantly and hugged them, with Dialo joining them somewhat reluctantly a few moments later.
Grora decided this was a good time to slip out of the room.
