Notes: I made a list of 200 prompts for myself. Here's one! The other 199 will take a while.

The worst part, for Old, had been the initial act of imprisoning him in the Cast Pearl.

That had been painful. He has no doubt that if he went quietly it would have been over much more quickly, but he wasn’t the sort of person to give in, even knowing better than anyone else that resisting this spell of Meikai was doomed to failure. He clung on to whatever he could with everything he had, but the spell grew more forceful until at last it ripped his fingers away and he fell into the pearl.

After that, most of his pain had been emotional. He raged ceaselessly for years before finally calming down enough to help make any sort of plan about escaping. Even then, his bitterness overwhelmed him so much that nearly all he could think of was revenge.

Now and then his anger tired him out enough that he found himself a corner apart from everyone else and let the Cast Pearl soothe him for a while.

It was hard to tell, most of the time. His hatred overwhelmed him too much to really feel it, and the Sea of Death was far from a calming place. But the Cast Pearl itself had a gentle nature to it, as soft and sweet as Meikai’s melodies on his piano. If he stopped fighting for a while, his heart would be lightened and his body relaxed, just enough to keep him going.

Old hated having to resort to that, but it was impossible to feel nothing but anger for decades and stay sane. Many of the others in the Red Sea had already succumbed to madness and he wasn’t going to end up like that if he could help it.

It took a long time before anyone else discovered this habit: Tsuribari, looking for somewhere out of the way to read.

“What are you doing?” he asked, taking a seat next to him.

Old was at least grateful Tsuribari wasn’t likely to spread word of his hiding spots. “Just getting some peace and quiet.”

Tsuribari’s eyebrows raised. “Can you do that?”

“What do you mean?” asked Old.

“If I’m not focused on doing something else, the Pearl gets to me. It gets colder, and I always feel like someone’s watching every move I make. I can’t relax at all like that. Stella says she’s the same way, so it’s not just me.”

A moment of silence passed while Old attempted to reconcile this with his experiences. Even as he thought, the waters of the Pearl seemed to soak up the stress in his body, calming him.

Then he laughed, bitterly, but not without some small trace of humor in it. “That goddamned idiot sorcerer.”

Tsuribari caught on quickly. “He’s still playing favorites? That wouldn’t surprise me. I suppose in a way I feel sorry for you, Old.”

That got his attention. “What for?”

“It’s easier to hate someone who hates you in return,” said Tsuribari. “Hating someone who loves you is much more difficult.”

By the time Old had come up with an answer to that, Tsuribari had already begun to read from his book and was ignoring him completely.
