Summary: Wadanohara was a child of the sea, more than she was Tatsumiya’s child.
Notes: Fluff.

Tatsumiya had raised Wadanohara, but she had not done so alone.

Many in the sea hadn’t had their parents to guide them. Life in the ocean was dangerous, especially during the conflict with the Sea of Death, and plenty of young ones were left without one or both of their parents after the war was done.

The group now affectionately called the ‘treasure hunters’ (Minero, Creamil, Rimorimo, and Tomoshibi) had all lost their parents and banded together, and to this day Minero will say that they grew up in a harsh world with no one looking out for them but each other. Creamil and Rimorimo will then point out that they were well fed, had meals with practically everyone in the town at least once, and been kept out of trouble or scolded when they fell into trouble anyway by nearly as many. They’d been raised communally.

Wadanohara was a child of the sea, more than she was Tatsumiya’s child. She looked after her the most, of course, but when overwhelmed or needing a break, she turned to the best parents she knew.

Wadanohara was a common sight in Cherryblod and Doloz’s house ever since she was old enough to crawl and get into things in Tatsumiya’s home that she shouldn’t. Cherryblod already knew how to baby-proof a house, already knew plenty of skills from Lobco that Tatsumiya hadn’t picked up yet. When they weren’t outright looking after her for her, they were providing advice on food, what to do when she was crying, how quickly she ought to be growing, etc.

Wadanohara was a tiny child. Tatsumiya worried over her constantly, concerned she wasn’t getting enough nutrients or was sick in some way. Without Cherryblod and Doloz assuring her that some children simply grew more slowly, and that Wadanohara didn’t show any other signs of ill health, Tatsumiya might have gotten herself sick with worry.

Lobco kept her hair short for a while so that Wadanohara would have less easy targets to pull on when she visited. Wadanohara just found other ways to torment her, and she suffered through it bravely, as any older child should. Her parents rewarded her with sweets after Wadanohara left.

When Wadanohara grew old enough to speak, Tatsumiya never asked Wadanohara to call her ‘mama’, like Lobco did with Doloz, and so Wadanohara never did. She called her “’meeya” instead, not able to pronounce her full name. It was a pet name Tatsumiya accepted with pride.

Cherryblod and Doloz were not the only adults Tatsumiya came to for help. Irena played silly games with Wadanohara, never seeming to tire of peek-a-boo; Pulmo helped Tatsumiya learn how to precisely make clothes for a tiny child; Miyura chipped in for baby food. Even Helica babysat, however much she stressed that she didn’t know anything about children.

Everyone who could lend a hand did. Not because they owed a debt to the Great Sorcerer, but because there was a child still here who needed love and care.
