Macarona is the first one to ask the question of Etihw, after the girls find out. She fiddles with her fingers as she asks, “Um, my… my ancestor, was she nice?”

The question stuns Etihw long enough for Chelan to chime in with something, which Dialo interprets. “Chelan wants to know if her ancestor was a good person.”

“I’d like to know that as well,” says Froze.

Yosafire starts, “And mine-”

“You should be asking Kcalb that,” Froze reminds her.

“Oh, right!” Yosafire doesn’t miss a beat. “Hey, old man, what was my ancestor like?”

“Mine too,” says Rawberry, for once focused on the conversation at hand.

Dialo nods. “Likewise.”

Etihw and Kcalb look at each other, unsure of how to answer the children. Can they really just tell them the full truth? After all, the people they were reincarnated from could be cruel, and bloodthirsty, and everything that the girls standing before them are not.

Etihw speaks first. “They were very much a product of their times.” That gets a silent nod from Kcalb. “They were not bad people, but they lived in a place much less peaceful than where you all grew up, and that cultivated some worse traits in them.”

“Is that code for ‘they were jerks but I don’t want to say that out loud’?” asks Yosafire with narrowed eyes. “‘Cause it sounds a lot like that!”

“They could be a bit on the mean side,” says Etihw, remembering Rigatona’s vicious smile and Cranber’s teeth dripping with blood in particular. “But softer-hearted people didn’t last very long, in those days.”

Chelan droops, clearly downcast, and Dialo places a gentle hand on her shoulder. Etihw decides that pointing out that Ciel was the least violent of the three angels wouldn’t help much.

“...They were loyal,” says Kcalb. “All of them.” Etihw knows that Lost wasn’t necessarily loyal to him, but to Ciel, but that may have been more important in the end.

“Well, duh,” says Yosafire. “I’m the most loyal of loyal people, you can totally rely on me.” After another thought comes to her, she asks the question they were hoping she wouldn’t: “Did I know Froze’s ancestor?”

Kcalb and Etihw look at each other, and Etihw speaks again. “They were bitter enemies.”

“Whaaaat?!” Yosafire’s mouth hangs open for a second before she hangs onto Froze’s shoulders . “There’s no way I could ever hate Froze! Never ever!”

“They’re not talking about you, moron,” says Froze, though she doesn’t push her off. “They’re talking about some other people we’re reincarnated from. They’re not the same people as us.”

“That’s right,” Etihw says. “You’re your own people, so you don’t have to be bound at all by who your ancestors were.”

“That’s good,” says Macarona, breathing a sigh of relief. “If I had to hate demons or Rawberry, that would be awful.”

“I’m just wondering whether it means anything that I’m reincarnated from a man,” says Dialo. When Kcalb shakes his head, she smiles a little. “Then, that’s all I need to know. I wasn’t going to hate Chelan no matter what you said.”

Etihw smiles in return. They should have known that nothing would have stopped these girls from loving each other.
