Summary: Chiyo finds flowers in her locker, Seo is occasionally a good friend, and Mikoshiba speaks the language of flowers better than he speaks Japanese.
Notes: I forgot the pairing on Tumblr at first, hope that doesn't come back to haunt me.

The first flowers that Chiyo finds in her locker at the beginning of the week are yellow.

Chiyo stops and stares at them for a full half a minute before realizing that yes, someone has left flowers for her. She even checks to make sure she has the right locker. There’s no note attached, just a bouquet of beautiful yellow flowers.

She dares to entertain the idea that maybe Nozaki left them there for her, possibly to see her reaction for his manga, until she actually gets the nerve to ask, carrying the bouquet in front of her. “A-about, about the flowers…”

Nozaki stares blankly at her, more blankly than normal. “Flowers are Mikorin’s department. Ask him.”

“...Right.” So they’re not just for Nozaki’s manga research. Chiyo’s not sure why that makes her less excited. She turns to Mikoshiba. “Um, so, someone left me these flowers in my locker today.”

Mikoshiba glances at them only for a moment before pronouncing, “Yellow tulips. Meaning: one sided love.”

Chiyo would never have been able to tell without a label. “Huh, Mikorin, you’re pretty good at this!”

“Well, you know, wooing the hearts of young girls is my specialty…” Mikoshiba turns bright red and splutters, and Chiyo sighs.

The next week, another bouquet of flowers appears. These ones are red, similarly with no note attached, and Chiyo brings them over to Nozaki’s place.

Mikoshiba looks them over. “Amaryllis stands for shyness.”

Chiyo smiles brightly. Even without Nozaki involved, this is kind of fun. “Thank you, Mikorin.”

This time Mikoshiba holds his tongue, just turning red to save himself the trouble of the flirting step.

The pattern continues every week. Yellow camellias for longing. White roses for silence. Clearly whoever these are from has no intention of coming out with their feelings any time soon. She’s lucky to have Mikoshiba to translate them for her.

It’s flattering, but really, if someone can’t express their own feelings, there’s no chance any relationship would work out. So Chiyo doesn’t think about it too much.

Seo is the one who comes up with the plan. “Just stake out your locker. You know around when this guy brings you flowers, right?”

Actually, Chiyo’s not completely sure it’s a guy… But that’s not the most important thing. “But I can’t get in here early, and they could have come here all weekend.”

Seo waves her hand dismissively. “Nah, not unless they’re a teacher.”

...That’s creepy to think about.

“If they’re a student, they’ve got to just be showing up earlier than everybody else. Just set up cameras or something,” says Seo.

“That might be illegal!”

“Twist my arm, why don’t you? Okay, I’ll come early for you.”

Chiyo blinks. “Uh, wait, Seo, I didn’t say-”

“You can count on me.” Seo grins. “Your secret admirer won’t know what hit ‘em.”

Don’t actually hit them, Chiyo mouths. But it’s no use arguing with Seo.

Nor is it any use when Seo drags Mikoshiba by the back of his shirt over to Chiyo at the start of the next week, with Mikoshiba protesting all the way. “Let me go, come on, I’m begging you-”

“Caught ‘em,” says Seo, gleefully.

Chiyo looks between the two of them. “...Caught what?”

Seo’s grin turns even wider. It’s frightening imagining this expression focused on Mikoshiba, for whatever reason- “Your secret admirer. Found him.”

Now that she mentions it, Mikoshiba is trailing flower petals behind him…

“Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?!” squeaks Chiyo.

Seo dumps Mikoshiba on the ground. “My work here is done. Huh, I think I see a teacher coming-!” She bolts for it, leaving Chiyo and Mikoshiba behind in the hallway.

Chiyo stares at him. Mikoshiba stares at the ground. Other students circle around them as they head to class.

Finally, Mikoshiba says, “I just… wanted to do something you’d like.”

“Huh?” asks Chiyo. “I couldn’t really hear-”

Mikoshiba’s face snaps up to look at her. There are tears in the corners of his eyes. “I’m not good at making lunches for you like Nozaki is. I can’t sweep you off your feet like Kashima can. I’m only good at flowers and dating sims! Even if you never noticed, if they made you a little bit happy, then it was worth- was worth-”

“Mikorin,” says Chiyo. Mikorin falls silent. “...I don’t know what to say to that, but we’re going to be late to class.”

Mikoshiba looks crestfallen. He gets up, and with a muttered, “Sorry,” turns around.

“But, but!” Panicking, Chiyo puts herself in his path, facing him again. “That means I have all of school to think about my answer. Okay? Once school ends, I will definitely give you an answer. So… please don’t cry because of me.” She stands on the tip of her toes to wipe his tears away.

She doesn’t know what that answer will be. Never once did she consider that it might be him that liked her, who already knew that she had feelings elsewhere. The flowers make more sense to her now.

The way her heart lurches when he smiles at her with eyes that are still wet doesn’t make any sense at all.
