Title: your hands cuffed close to mine
Fandom: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo
Character(s): Diavolo
Pairing(s): Diavolo/Doppio
Genre: Angst
Word Count: 500
Rating: PG
Warnings: Spoilers, canon character death
Summary: Diavolo has won. Now what?
Notes: Falling back into JoJo's.

Diavolo has won. The arrow is his, King Crimson Requiem is under his control, and Giorno Giovanna and his associates are all dead.

Now what?

First, as always, he must dispose of evidence. That much is easy - it’s simple to pulverize their bodies into nothing but unrecognizable dust. He only hesitates when he returns to the dead body of Bruno Buccellati.

The last living residence of Vinegar Doppio.

He briefly considers giving him a proper burial, but, no - that would take too long, and be too easy to stumble upon later. Besides, even if it was temporarily Doppio’s body, that was only for a few minutes, at most. His spirit has no real attachment to the flesh. Anyway, it’s not important.

So Buccellati’s body goes the way of his friends’.

That taken care of, Diavolo finds his discarded sweater and puts it back on. Snug. He finds a mirror to peer into and frowns.

Without Doppio in his body, he can’t take his shape. He could dye his hair, maybe, but his muscles and general stature are a bigger obstacle, and even if he somehow dealt with those he can’t mimic Doppio’s voice. The identity will have to be discarded entirely.

That’s simple enough. Doppio had no real attachments and no contacts outside of Passione, so hardly anyone will notice his disappearance. He can always act as though Doppio betrayed him and was killed for it (though Diavolo knows he never would), and a new underboss was promoted in his place.

...He might actually have to promote someone else to the position. Such a pain. He misses Doppio already. It was so much easier to have him around.

Is convenience the only reason he’s unhappy right now?

Well, there’s the practical matters as well. It will be much more difficult for him to hide without a second face to hide behind. He supposes plastic surgery is an option he’ll look into right away. With that, he might be able to manage, though disguising his voice is another problem. He’ll only be able to communicate with his subordinates through text from now on.

Are those the only reasons?

Still staring at the mirror, Diavolo tries to mimic one of Doppio’s expressions. Smiles that doesn’t have the weight of arrogance behind them, that have some measure of actual kindness, look wrong on his face. He stops.

...No, he supposes those aren’t the only reasons. As reclusive and paranoid as he is, being able to speak to one person, a person he trusted beyond all others, was a relief. Doppio was utterly devoted to him, that much was clear, and Diavolo… cared for him in some way, beyond what was required of him due to their shared body.

The sweet words he called Doppio hadn’t completely been to manipulate him. He’d also genuinely thought he was cute. Precious - he was precious to him.

And it’s natural to be upset when something precious is taken from you. Even someone like Diavolo can acknowledge that.
