Summary: Kyouka sits with a man she doesn’t know at a party.
Notes: I'm productive today!
The party is partially for Kyouka’s sake, to celebrate her successfully passing the entrance exam and becoming a full member of the detective agency, as well as helping to take down the Guild. She understands that, and therefore spends most of the time with the other agency members, but eventually it becomes too much for her and she seeks out the quietest corner of the room.
That corner is currently occupied by a man she doesn’t recognize, with his hair covering most of his face.
“May I sit next to you?” she asks.
“Ah - sure,” he says in return. “But Ranpo will definitely… surely come back to talk to me in a minute or two…”
Even Kyouka, who has difficulty reading people, can tell he doesn’t really believe what he’s saying. She tilts her head a little. “Ranpo invited you? Are you friends?”
Behind his hair, Kyouka can catch the faintest glimpse of an eye widening. “Friends?! We’re bitter rivals! Sworn enemies! I’ll definitely outdo him the next time we do battle!”
“But he invited you to a party,” she replies. “Is that what enemies do?”
“...He said he wanted to read one of my books,” he answers, more subdued. “He didn’t tell me there was going to be a party, so I brought it over, and now it’d be rude to leave… I don’t belong at this party, either. I’m definitely an enemy of the detective agency, since I’m a Guild member - well, the Guild is dissolving now, so maybe not, but...”
“Are you joining the detective agency too?” she asks.
The man chokes for a moment before shaking his head. “No! Definitely not! I’m not interested in things like justice and helping the weak and downtrodden out - I just gave the information I did to Ranpo so I could match my wits against him again. And besides, my ability is useless in a straightforward fight, you can’t just ask a criminal to read a book...”
“Oh, so you’re our informant,” Kyouka says. “Then you do belong at this party, since you helped.”
“I didn’t do it for you.” The man sinks further into his seat.
“That’s probably why Ranpo invited you. But he knew you wouldn’t come if he put it like that, so he asked to read your book.” Kyouka nods firmly, satisfied with herself for having solved a tiny mystery without the aid of Super Deduction.
“Doesn’t… doesn’t that mean I’ve been defeated by him again?” the man asks.
Kyouka considers that for a second. “Yes.” When the man’s only response is to groan, she assumes a change of subject is necessary. “I’m Kyouka.”
“Edgar Allan Poe.” Finally, the man brushes some of the hair out of his face to look at her properly. “What are you doing over here? Isn’t this party for you?”
“It’s loud,” she says. “I got tired, but I don’t want to leave the party yet. So I’m taking a break here.”
“I don’t like loud parties either.” Poe’s gaze flicks to Ranpo across the room, chatting with someone completely different, before returning to her. “But if I just go home now, I won’t know if he read my book or not. So I’m staying until he talks to me.”
“Oh. You’re stubborn.” When Poe looks offended, she adds, “That’s good. Lots of people at the agency are stubborn. You’d make a good detective.”
Poe’s cheeks turn a light shade of pink before he lets his hair fall back to try and hide them. “Thank you.”
Ranpo never comes back to check on Poe, or at least he hasn’t by the time Kyouka decides to return to the party proper. It’s hard to tell, but somehow, Poe looks a little happier when she leaves than he did when she sat down.
