Title: they don't flutter about, I'd do without
Fandom: Bungou Stray Dogs
Character(s): Poe
Pairing(s): Onesided Poe/Ranpo
Genre: Angst
Word Count: 500
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Summary: Poe on the nonexistence of Super Deduction. (And how terribly, terribly gay he is.)
Notes: I'm sorry I ship this so hard.

Edogawa Ranpo has no Ability, and this is rapidly becoming a problem for Poe.

“The only thing worthy of awe and admiration in this world is your Ability, ‘Super Deduction’, right?” he repeats alone in his room, remembering his words to Ranpo before their second battle.

Black Cat in the Rue Morgue doesn’t allow anyone to use their abilities. It was unfair as a competition, but Poe was interested in vengeance, not a proper rematch.

Ranpo seems to believe that his deductions are the result of an Ability, as he was momentarily in despair over losing it and refused to even try to solve the mystery. Once he was properly motivated by Yosano’s ‘death’, however, it took him no time at all to solve the puzzle.

So, no Ability. He’s just that good.

Poe doesn’t look down on people without Abilities. Not having an Ability doesn’t keep a person from greatness: it just makes them much more vulnerable to a person who does have an Ability in certain areas, usually a straight-up fight. Poe’s not interested in violence to begin with. So the problem isn’t there.

The problem is that for six years Poe has idolized Super Deduction. He has taken it into his heart and built an altar to it there. While he has always intended to defeat it one day, there can be no doubt that he possesses a certain amount of attachment to it as well.

So, if Super Deduction does not exist, then he has to change some of his thoughts, just a little.

“The only thing worthy of awe and admiration in this world is you, Edogawa Ranpo,” Poe says out loud, testing how the words feel on his tongue..

...That is the least heterosexual sentence he has ever said.

Even his sister Rosalie, not known for being especially bright, would listen to him say that and tell him to give that man a bouquet of roses. Not even considering that Ranpo probably doesn’t care much for roses - and the fact that Poe has already thought about whether or not Ranpo likes flowers is damning in itself - that’s a terrible idea, because they’re rivals. Barely rivals, at that; Poe may have pushed Ranpo to his limit once, and Ranpo may have acknowledged it out loud, but they’re still not on equal terms with each other.

With the absence of his Ability to use as a shield, Poe is left admiring the man himself; Ranpo has probably never felt his heart flutter in his life, and certainly not about Poe.

Poe sighs and rests his face in his hands. He can’t say anything to Ranpo about it. He shouldn’t say anything to anyone about it, or Ranpo will find out somehow. That’s what he’d expect of a detective like him.

He can’t let Ranpo know. Not when Ranpo has only just started to treat Poe with respect - he can’t mess that up for himself because of a silly crush. Not now.

Maybe in another six years.
