Title: people who don't look to be respected
Fandom: Bungou Stray Dogs
Character(s): Atsushi, Dazai, Odasaku's kids
Pairing(s): None
Genre: Fluff
Word Count: 505
Rating: PG
Warnings: Brief suicide attempt mention
Summary: Atsushi visits Dazai’s home for the first time and meets… kids.
Notes: I forgot to mention the kids in the summary for three seconds, that's important.
Dazai’s home strikes Atsushi as too big, from the outside. It’s a house rather than an apartment, and even though it’s not a mansion or anything close, it’s rare that a bachelor would have one for himself. Maybe Dazai has a secret girlfriend he lives with, Atsushi thinks, or maybe-
“Welcome home, Dazai!”
-he has kids. That… makes sense, and yet completely does not make sense with what Atsushi knows of Dazai.
Two children greet him first, a boy and a girl, and then others filter into the room to say hello, all boys. Dazai smiles at them and greets them all by name.
“You never bring people home, Dazai,” says Sakura, who looks like the youngest.
Katsumi, who looks like one of the oldest, says seriously, “He’s too old for you to adopt.”
And that draws a laugh from Dazai, one that sounds as genuine as any Atsushi’s heard from him. “He’s my coworker. Do you want a sibling? We don’t have any more beds, so you’ll have to fight to see who has to go.”
Their eyes all widen in horror, like the horror of children who actually believe that an adult has got their nose. Kosuke frantically shakes his head. “No way! You can’t replace any of us!”
Dazai pats Kosuke’s head. “Have you been veeeery good?”
“He’s joking,” Atsushi says, before they can panic any more. “Err - I’m Nakajma Atsushi. Pleased to meet all of you.”
They chorus an out-of-sync ‘nice to meet you, Nakajima-san’.
“Hearing ‘Kunikida-san’ is one thing, but you’re too young to be called that, Atsushi-kun,” Dazai says.
“Even if he works with you?” asks Shinji.
“Well, he’s my subordinate, so don’t feel like you have to stand on ceremony with him,” Dazai replies with a shrug.
“So… Oniisan, do you like working with Dazai?” Sakura asks.
Atsushi thinks about dealing with Dazai and everything that entails, from the jokes that seem almost malicious, to needing to fish him out of the river now and then, to having someone for the first time in his life who believes in him as a person who can do good in the world and not just hurt.
“Of course,” he says. “I’m really grateful to your dad for everything he’s done for me.”
Kosuke’s the first to answer, and he does it plainly: “Dazai’s not our dad.” Next to him, Dazai is wearing an unconcerned expression, as if the subject were about someone else.
“Oh - I’m sorry,” Atsushi answers.
He stays a little longer, then bids farewell to return to his own home.
Dazai speaks to him at the door, in a low voice the children can’t hear. “Kunikida is the only other person right now who knows where this house is. If you tell anyone else without my approval, even someone from the Agency…”
Atsushi shivers. He really doesn’t want Dazai to finish that sentence. “I-I understand. ...For not being a dad, you’re surprisingly dad-like, Dazai-san.”
“Me? Dad-like? Are you sure?” Dazai chuckles. “I’m just repaying a debt, that’s all.”
