Character(s): Dazai, Odasaku, Shinji
Pairing(s): Odasaku/Dazai
Genre: Hurt/Comfort
Word Count: 500

Summary: Living with young children means you must indulge them whenever they have bad dreams, no matter what you were in the middle of.
Notes: I intended to start the 'AU where Odasaku and Dazai both join the ADA and nothing hurts' AU with 'Oda Sakunosuke's Entrance Exam' but that isn't working out right now, so have this.

Dazai likes Odasaku’s kids. They’re all little hellions and they’re worst when they’re working together, but they’re good kids, and he’s had a couple of years to get used to living with them. He would never admit to any fatherly feelings - maybe uncle-like feelings at best - but he certainly doesn’t dislike them.

However, that’s being tested right now by the rapid knock on the door.

Odasaku gives Dazai, lying beneath him, a brief apologetic look before pulling away and looking around for his missing pants. “Yes?”

“I had a bad dream.” Shinji’s small voice.

Even Dazai can’t get too mad at a nine-year old bothering his father after bedtime for that reason, no matter what/who the father was about to do. “Hamper,” he whispers to Odasaku.

“Just a minute.” Odasaku goes for his pants that had been tossed into the hamper, while Dazai fishes his from off the floor. Once they’re both acceptable levels of modest, he unlocks the bedroom door and opens it.

Sniffling, Shinji clings to Odasaku, who crouches to better pet Shinji’s hair. “I’m sorry…”

“It’s okay,” Odasaku says. “Do you want to talk about it?”

After a few moments, Shinji says, “The… the mafia came after us.”

Odasaku pauses just a moment, before continuing to stroke his son’s hair. “They’re not going to do that.”

“They did, though,” Shinji says, his voice rising a tiny bit. He looks to Dazai, then at the ground. “They made you and Uncle Dazai go back and be bad people again, and you left us all alone.”

The Port Mafia would never just take them back now, Dazai knows, and they’d do worse to the children than just leave them without their father. But for a child, just being abandoned is scary enough.

“That won’t happen. Dazai and I aren’t going to be bad people again. Right, Dazai?” Odasaku asks.

“Of course not,” Dazai says. “Our boss would get really mad at us if we did that, he’s pretty scary-”

“Dazai,” Odasaku says, a little more sharp than usual.

“-and we wouldn’t want to disappoint you and your siblings,” Dazai adds quickly. “We’re dedicated to the good person lifestyle now, so you don’t need to worry!”

Shinji rubs at his eyes. “...O...okay. Um… can I stay here tonight…?”

Dazai keeps himself from sighing. “It’s fine with me.”

Odasaku nods, then picks Shinji up and deposits him on the middle of the bed. “Between Dazai and I, you’ll be completely safe.”

Shinji snuggles into Dazai’s side, and Dazai starts stroking his hair without thinking too much about it. Odasaku turns off the light and climbs into bed on Shinji’s other side.

After about a minute, Shinji speaks up again. “...When we get older, will we be able to protect you too?”

That’s unlikely bordering on impossible, but...

“You’re already helping us, so you don’t need to protect us,” Odasaku says. His voice is tired, but fond. “Go to sleep.”

Shinji yawns. “Okay. Goodnight.”

Dazai’s sleep is dreamless and peaceful.
