Summary: Odasaku’s kids decide if Dazai is worthy of dating their dad.
Notes: Back to the Odazai grind.
“Stay behind me and wait outside until I give you the okay to follow,” Odasaku had told Dazai, with as much seriousness as Dazai’s ever seen on him. “They know we’re coming, so they have something planned.”
The instructions wouldn’t be out of place for a mission, but…
“They’re just your children,” Dazai had replied. “How bad can it be?”
Still, now that they’re outside the children’s room, Dazai does as told and waits behind Odasaku as he knocks. “I’m coming in,” Odasaku says, and cautiously opens the door.
There’s no immediate explosion or frenzy of activity, or anything like that. Five heads turn toward Odasaku as he enters.
“Welcome back,” says one of them, a boy sitting by the bookcase. “Did you bring Dazai-san?”
“That depends on if you’re going to jump on him the moment he walks through the door,” says Odasaku.
“We wouldn’t do that!” says another boy, the one idly tossing a baseball up and down. “We just want to have a ‘talk’ with him.”
“...That should be fine,” Odasaku says, and turns back. “Dazai, you can come in.”
Dazai enters the room. Odasaku is sitting down on the lower bunk of a bunk bed, so Dazai takes his seat next to him before scanning the room.
“Pleased to meet you,” he says, and smiles a winning smile normally reserved for ladies.
Another one of the boys, the one with sunglasses on his head, clears his throat. “Dazai-san, we’re going to have to ask you a few questions-”
“Did you lose an eye?” asks the remaining boy, his eyes wide. “Was it really gross?”
The boy who’d just spoken glares over at him. “Yu, that wasn’t one of the questions!”
“But Kosuke, it’s really important!” Yu shoots back. “I bet it was super painful!”
“Can we see it?” the last child, a girl in pigtails asks while plopping down directly in front of Dazai.
“I don’t want to see it!” Bookcase boy. “It’s probably really super gross.”
Yu starts, “Shinji, you’re such a wimp, that’s why it’s cool-”
He’s interrupted by Odasaku clearing his throat. “Ground rules,” he says, and the children quiet down. “You can’t try to take off Dazai’s bandages, Dazai isn’t going to take them off for you, and you shouldn’t ask about them either. Okay?”
There’s a chorus of ‘okays’ from the children. Shinji is visibly relieved, and the rest look disappointed.
Dazai’s a tinge relieved, himself. He’d almost forgotten that children don’t have filters. “What else did you want to ask me?”
“Ahem,” says Kosuke. “Dazai-san, we’re going to ask you a few questions to see if you’re good enough to date Odasaku. Katsumi, you start.”
The boy with the baseball squares his shoulders. With complete seriousness, he asks, “If you were eating Odasaku’s favorite candy and you only had one, would you give it to him?”
Dazai has to try very hard not to laugh. “Of course I would,” he says.
Katsumi nods, satisfied. “Yu’s turn.”
Yu clears his throat. “What do you like that Odasaku likes?”
Slightly tougher. “Let’s see… we both like cats, and we have the same favorite bar,” Dazai says. “We have the same taste in movies, and we both like going to the ocean when we’re on vacation.”
“That’s good enough,” Yu says. “Shinji?”
“...Are you going to get married?” Shinji asks, in a quiet voice. Kosuke and Yu make faces.
“Well-” Dazai glances towards Odasaku, who isn’t looking at him or providing any help. “We just started dating, so it’s a little early to think about that. And it’s kind of dangerous getting married with our jobs, so…”
Shinji frowns. That’s not a satisfactory answer, clearly. “Sakura.”
The girl leans closer towards him and asks, “Are you nice?”
Ahaha. “I’m nice to Odasaku,” Dazai says, which is the truth, and also doesn’t touch upon the many ways he is very, very not nice to a great deal of other people.
“But are you nice?” she repeats, more emphatically. “Would you be nice to us?”
“I’d be nice to you,” he says, and hopes this line of questioning stops very soon. “You’re all good kids. Odasaku told me so.”
“Okay.” Sakura sits back. “Kosuke?”
“I probably shouldn’t bother asking,” Kosuke says, “‘cause you look like Katsumi did when a bully pushed him on the playground-”
“I had one bandage for a week,” says Katsumi, a touch defensively. “It was totally different.”
“Well it’s like that, but more,” says Kosuke, and turns his attention back to Dazai. “Odasaku’s job is super dangerous, so if you’re gonna date him, are you gonna be able to protect him?”
...Actually, can they go back to the ‘are you nice’ questions, because Dazai can just straight up lie about that. He tries to do the same now - ‘of course I can’ - but it doesn’t leave his mouth.
Odasaku rescues him when he takes too long to answer. “I can protect myself. You don’t have to worry about me.”
“But if you get a boyfriend,” says Shinji, “shouldn’t he sweep you off your feet and protect you from all the bad guys?”
“Maybe it’s the other way around and Odasaku’s rescuing him,” says Yu. “Dazai-san doesn’t look very strong.”
“I’m way stronger than I look,” says Dazai, weakly. The children give him Looks with varying degrees of ‘sure you are’.
“They can protect each other,” Sakura says, nodding as if it’s already been decided. “That’s the most romantic.”
Murmured agreement. Kosuke clears his throat. “Show of hands, who thinks we should let them date?”
Sakura’s hand goes up immediately. The boys follow suit a little more slowly, Shinji being the last one to raise his.
“Okay,” Kosuke says. “You can date Odasaku on one condition.”
Dazai feels a sense of dread wash over him. “Which is?”
“You can’t do any kissy stuff in front of us,” Kosuke replies. The other children, acting as one, make grossed out faces.
Dazai laughs. It’s not his usual laugh, but one with a sense of relief behind it. “It’ll be hard, but I think I can manage not to kiss him in front of you. What about you, Odasaku?”
“I’ll do my best,” Odasaku says, and smiles.
The interrogation was worth it just for that.
