Summary: It’s Atsushi’s birthday, and of course there’s a party thrown for him.
Notes: Someone wanted super fluff.
Atsushi is turning nineteen soon.
“It’s my first birthday since I left the orphanage,” he says. He doesn’t wince as much when he says ‘the orphanage’ now, though Chuuya figures that there always will be a moment where his smile falters. “The Agency decided to throw me a birthday party the day before, and I’m not really sure what to expect.”
Chuuya shrugs, still playing with Atsushi’s hair. “Definitely cake, definitely presents, everything else is optional. It depends on how big a deal they make out of it, but since it’s your first birthday party, I’d bet they’re going to go all-out.”
“...There won’t be clowns, will there?” Atsushi asks with sudden worry in his tone.
Chuuya snorts. “You’re nineteen, not nine. It’ll be clown-free, trust me on this.”
Atsushi lets out a sigh of relief.
“So, any idea what you want to do on your actual birthday?” Chuuya asks.
“Anything you think sounds good is fine, Chuuya-san,” Atsushi says, and then adds when Chuuya frowns at him, “I - I guess I’d like to go out to dinner with you? But nowhere too fancy, please.”
Chuuya scratches most of the restaurants off his mental list of options. “Got it. You just relax, and have fun at the party, alright?”
“Right. I’ll tell you about the highlights later.” Atsushi’s smile is a little apologetic - both of them know why without having to say.
It’s sometime after Atsushi’s returned home that Chuuya gets a call from a number he doesn’t recognize. That usually means telemarketers, so he suppresses a sigh before picking up. “Hello, Nakahara Chuuya speaking.”
“This is Fukuzawa.”
No need to say which Fukuzawa: Chuuya instantly tenses. Hanging up on the Armed Detective Agency’s president then and there would be satisfying, but dangerous. “What do you want,” he says instead.
Fukuzawa sounds pleased and utterly unthreatened as he replies, “I have a party invitation for you.”
Chuuya already knew where the Agency’s headquarters were, of course: they don’t make it a secret. He even passes by sometimes on the way to other places, never stopping to give it more than a glance.
This is the first time he’s stood outside the building in broad daylight. He hesitates for a few seconds longer than he really should - it could be a trap, of course, and that’s more important than any other reasons he could have for hesitating - before ringing the doorbell.
The person to answer the door is Kunikida. They stare at each other in silence for a moment, before Kunikida nods and moves to let Chuuya inside.
They’ve decorated the Agency with streamers and balloons. A big ‘Happy Birthday, Atsushi’ banner hangs above the food table, where there is a cake large enough to feed about twenty people.
There are faces Chuuya recognizes - Kyouka makes eye contact with him briefly before looking away - and faces he doesn’t, but the one he’s looking for right now is turned away from the door, engaged in animated conversation with Fukuzawa. It’s animated on Atsushi’s side, anyway.
Chuuya is very good at sneaking up on people when he wants to be. Atsushi yelps when Chuuya slings an arm around his shoulders and says, “Guess who?”
“Chuuya-?!” Atsushi’s startled enough to drop the honorific from his name as he whirls around. “What - what are you doing here? You’re not-”
“I was invited,” says Chuuya, nonchalant. He looks to Fukuzawa, who’s as impassive-seeming as ever. “Thanks for that.” It stings a little thanking the leader of the enemy organization, but only a little.
Fukuzawa inclines his head. “You’re welcome. The vote was overwhelmingly in your favor.”
If Chuuya had to guess, he’d say that Dazai and probably Kyouka voted against letting him in. Not that he blames either of them. He hasn’t actually spotted Dazai yet, but why bother thinking about Dazai when Atsushi is hugging him?
“I’m so glad you could make it,” Atsushi says. He sounds like he might cry from it all.
Someone clears their throat. “Can you at least keep the PDA down?” Dazai asks, from somewhere behind him. “Please, Atsushi-kun? For me?”
“It’s just a hug, Dazai-san,” Atsushi answers, not letting go. Chuuya gives him a squeeze.
“You’re lucky it’s your birthday,” says Dazai. “I’m going to go sulk now, if anyone wants to cheer me up.”
“Have fun,” says Kunikida. To Atsushi he says, “Just ignore him. As long as you two don’t get… handsy, it’s fine.”
Atsushi pulls away, a little pink in the face. “We won’t!”
“Oh, now you’ve ruined all my plans,” says Chuuya. He chuckles when Atsushi blushes more. “I’m joking. I know how to behave myself.”
Atsushi doesn’t stay glued to his side for the entire party, just for most of it. That leaves him alone some of the time, and talking to Agency members besides Atsushi is… awkward. He doesn’t even attempt with Kyouka or (ugh) Dazai, and he has mixed results with the rest. On one end of the spectrum, Kenji is perfectly friendly to him and even compliments his Ability; on the other end, Yosano somehow manages to imply a threat to his manhood within five minutes of conversation. He doesn’t talk to her for very long.
Other than the part where he’s enemies with literally everyone else attending, it’s a nice party. The food is good, especially the cake. Atsushi has three slices before asking Chuuya to stop him, by force if necessary, if he tries to have another.
The presents they’ve given Atsushi are all things he clearly likes or could use - even Ranpo, who just got him a gift card, got it for his favorite restaurant.
When Atsushi’s reached the end of the pile of presents, he looks towards Chuuya, who coughs. “I’ll give you mine tomorrow,” he says. Bringing a package into the Agency would require a lot more trust than he expects or could ask from them, even on Atsushi’s birthday.
Atsushi’s eyes soften. “I’m sure it’ll be wonderful, Chuuya-san, since it’s from you.”
Dazai gags. Kunikida elbows him in the ribs.
