“Bro, I gotta ask you a favor,” says Odasaku, and Chuuya nods for him to keep going. “Can you teach me how to write love poems?”

Chuuya snorts. “Okay, first off, you’re asking the wrong guy for love poetry. I haven’t seriously written a love poem to anybody since Yasuko.” And they all know how that turned out. “Anyway, who are you gonna be writing it for?”

“It’s for Dazai,” says Odasaku, with only a hint of embarrassment.

“Well that changes everything!” A grin spreads across Chuuya’s face. “Yeah, I’ll teach you how to write a love poem. Leave it to me.”

Odasaku’s not sure he trusts that smile, but he can’t back out now, so… “Thanks, I’ll owe you big time!”

“You sure will. Now where do we start…”

Of course Odasaku wants to give Dazai only the best. That’s why he asked for help in the first place: he knows he can write, but poetry isn’t his strong suit. That’s also why he’s going through poem after poem and being criticized for all of them.

“Cliche,” Chuuya says about one line, crossing it out in red pen. “You don’t want cliches in anything you want to inspire an emotion, and love poems are nothing without emotion. He’s heard this a hundred times. It’s different if it’s an allusion, but this is just generic.”

“Got it, senpai,” says Odasaku. Odasaku is technically older than him by a few years, but Chuuya was born first, and anyway Chuuya just likes being called that.

“Also, if you’re going to do a tanka, you’ve gotta do a tanka right,” Chuuya continues. “You can’t do an almost-tanka with 5-7-5-7-6, it throws the whole form off.”

“I thought it was clever,” says Odasaku, a bit meekly.

“You’re not trying to be clever,” says Chuuya, scowling. “You’re trying to get your feelings across. Write another one.”

Chuuya is a harsh instructor, but at least that means he’s taking this seriously. Odasaku taps his pen on his paper a few times, trying to come up with another poem.

“You’ve been spending a lot of time with Chuuya lately,” says Dazai, and Odasaku almost chokes.

“Y-yeah,” he says, recovering quickly. “I guess I have!”

“He’s not making you drink with him, is he?” There’s worry clear on Dazai’s face. “If he is, I’ll- I’ll-”

Odasaku can’t help but laugh. “It’s not that, Dazai. He’s just teachin’ me how to write poetry, that’s all.”

“Oh, is that all?” Dazai says, obviously relieved. “I didn’t know you wanted to go into poetry.”

“It’s been kinda on my mind lately.” Since he’s spent more time with Dazai living in the same library, those poetic sentiments about his smile and the way Odasaku’s heart flutters around him have been much more noticeable.

“Can I see anything you’ve written?” Dazai asks.

“When I come up with anything decent,” says Odasaku, with a smile, “I’ll be sure you don’t miss it.”

“This is good.”

Odasaku raises both eyebrows. “But…?”

“But nothing,” says Chuuya. “It’s a good, solid love poem. If you were trying to win me over with this I’d be impressed.”

Odasaku’s eyes light up. “Thanks a ton, senpai!”

“Yeah, yeah. Remember, you owe me for this.” Chuuya’s genuinely smiling, though, so Odasaku doesn’t think his future repayment will be too bad.

Anyway, he can’t think about that now. He has a love poem to deliver.

He finds Dazai within ten minutes - he’s by himself in a corner of the library, reading a novel. Odasaku tries not to give away his nervousness as he says, “I wrote you something.”

Dazai sets his book down immediately. He’s grinning. “Let me see it! If it’s by you I’m sure it’s impressive.”

Odasaku hands him the sheet of paper and waits. Dazai’s expression soon changes to one of surprise as he reads the poem in silence.

He looks back up at Odasaku. “...You wrote this for me?”

Odasaku nods, tense.

Dazai stands and circles the table until he’s next to Odasaku. “I don’t have a poem prepared for this, so I hope you’ll accept the next best thing.”

With that, he pulls Odasaku into a sweet kiss.

Odasaku melts into it, and only reluctantly pulls away after a few seconds in order to be able to speak. “Are you kiddin’? That’s way better than any poem I could ever write.”

“Hmmm, no, I think that poem was worth at least four more kisses,” Dazai says with a coy smile. “We’d better keep going.”

They don’t use words for a while after that, poetry or otherwise.
