Though they’re both naturalists, the difference between the amount of praise and attention Shimazaki received during his lifetime and after it and the amount of notice Shuusei has gotten is enormous. While most people acknowledge that Shuusei’s works have some social importance, or at the very least “Rough Living” does, they aren’t all that notable as works of literature. Shimazaki was one of the driving forces of a new literary movement in poetry, and his novels spent much more time in the public eye.

Though, not all that attention Shimazaki got for his writing was positive. If avoiding trouble means avoiding notice, then Shuusei supposes it’s a sacrifice he’ll have to make.

“My favorite Japanese novelist?” Shimazaki repeats, after the librarian asks the question. Shuusei doesn’t mean to eavesdrop, and fully intends to stop paying attention and go back to searching the shelves for some reading material after he hears the answer, but... “It’d have to be Shuusei.”

That makes Shuusei drop the book he’d just pulled out, and of course the clatter gets both Shimazaki and Miss Librarian to look his way. “Is something wrong?” Shimazaki asks. “Did you not get enough sleep? That can make someone much clumsier, even if they feel like they’re functioning normally.”

“It’s not that,” Shuusei replies, picking up the book and putting it back. Conveniently, this means he doesn’t have to look at either of them. “I just didn’t think you’d pick my books as your very favorite.”

“Why not?” Shimazaki asks, sounding genuinely confused.

Shuusei hears Miss Librarian unsuccessfully stifle a laugh, and scowls at the library shelves. “Wouldn’t you rather read Kouyou-sensei’s works? Or even Kyouka’s?”

“No. Kyouka’s style is beautiful to read, but I prefer realistic stories,” Shimazaki replies.

“Then, Tayama, or Kunikida…” Shuusei knows Shimazaki doesn’t flatter - he wishes he would be a little less brutally honest, most of the time - but he can’t just accept it as the truth.

“Tayama only can write about himself, which limits him too much,” Shimazaki says plainly. “And Kunikida’s earlier works are much more romantic than naturalist. I think you’re the best of the naturalists, Shuusei. Definitely better than me.”

Shuusei decides not to turn around to look at Shimazaki until his face is a little less hot. After taking a moment to halfway compose himself, he mumbles a, “Thank you.”

Even if it’s just one person calling him ‘the best’, it’s something he’d wanted for a long time. From his teacher, from his peers, from just about anyone. And if it’s Shimazaki, then he really should have known from the start that he wasn’t joking.

Shimazaki is a good friend to have, after all-

Miss Librarian pops up at his side. “You’re blushing,” she says, smiling way too wide.

“Shuusei’s blushing?” Shimazaki asks, and hurries to join her to confirm for himself. “Wow, you’re right! I didn’t know your face was capable of that reaction, Shuusei.”

-no, Shuusei takes it back, he’s still the most bothersome person to be friends with.
