Summary: Naoya is unfailingly honest, which Akutagawa appreciates.
Notes: The last of my request fics!

Nobody can really know for sure how self-aware they are, but Naoya likes to think he knows himself pretty well, and he knows he’s not good at things like ‘tact’. He’s been criticized for treating “vulnerable” authors harshly before, but all he’s ever been is direct and honest. Sometimes that’s praiseworthy, sometimes that’s close to cruel, but he is what he is and he likes who he likes, without a veneer of tact and politeness over it.

Akutagawa is vulnerable, or at least more so than most writers. The librarian calls it ‘unstable’, but whatever you call it, the point is that he ruminates too much on his own failings and denies his strengths. Akutagawa is a case for the National Library needing to hire a professional therapist.

But Akutagawa is also Naoya’s friend, so even if he’s the worst person suited for treating him delicately, he won’t abandon him. Even though he’s lost track of the number of times he’s upset Akutagawa, and knows he’s upset him, and can’t directly retract what he’s said - he’ll just try to make up for it in other ways.

“I appreciate your honesty,” Akutagawa says one day, and Naoya raises an eyebrow. “Many of the other writers here are afraid to say anything impolite or negative to me, so I can’t always believe that what they’re saying is the full truth. They mean well, but...” He puffs on his cigarette, then speaks again with a soft smile. “But if it’s you, I know you aren’t hiding anything from me to make me feel better.”

Naoya shrugs. “It’s no big deal. We’re friends, I’m not gonna lie to you.”

“I must have been lucky to have a friend like you in my life,” Akutagawa says with a small chuckle.

Akutagawa, who was unlucky every other way and spent much of his time miserable until he died, lucky because of him?

Naoya immediately shakes his head. “Nah, the way I see it, I’m the lucky one getting to know you.”

Even he knows he lived a charmed life from the day of his birth. Akutagawa’s presence in his life as a friend was just one of his many, many blessings.

“Is that so…?” Akutagawa just said he believes him on anything, so it’s not a real question, but words to fill space, and Naoya waits for an actual answer. Which doesn’t seem to be forthcoming, as Akutagawa looks away from him.

...Are his cheeks a little red?

“Ryuu, you’re blushing,” Naoya says with a grin.

“I’m not,” Akutagawa says, blushing even more.

“So I’m lying? What happened to ‘appreciating my honesty’, huh?” Naoya asks with a teasing lilt. Lying and joking are two completely different things.

“It’s not that I don’t believe you,” Akutagawa says, as chastised as if Naoya was being completely serious. He tries to hide his face behind his hair, but since it’s in a thin ponytail, it doesn’t work well. “But it’s… embarrassing.”

“Awwww, that’s cute.”

“...Please stop making it worse.”
