Summary: Katai and Doppo get some time away from Tokyo to be close to nature. Also, secret dolphin girlfriends are probably not actually a thing.
Notes: This wasn't actually on my to-do list.
For as long as Katai’s known him, Doppo’s adored nature. No, that’s not quite right - he’s been in awe of nature. No matter how many hiking trails he climbs or how many sunsets he watches reflect off peaceful lakes, it always brings him joy to be close to the natural world. There’s a sparkle in Doppo’s eyes when he’s away from the hustle and bustle of civilization that Katai just doesn’t see when they’re in the city.
So it’s a little bit of a shame that there’s not much nature in Tokyo proper, but they do what they can. Doppo gets moody if he’s stuck in a metropolis for too long, so he makes frequent visits to the local parks, and that tides him over until he can take a vacation long enough to properly get away. Of course, if it’s a trip to an exciting enough locale, he invites Katai along.
The ferry ride to Chichijima takes a full twenty-four hours, and Katai would swear that Doppo spends the entirety of those twenty-four hours either sleeping or babbling about their destination, how the Ogasawara islands have flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world, and how they’re visiting at just the right time to start seeing humpback whales, and maybe they’ll be lucky enough to get a tour on Minamijima if they aren’t already booked for the week. It would be annoying how they haven’t even arrived yet and Doppo can’t stop talking about their destination, but when Doppo does it it’s more endearing than tiring.
Though Katai does throw a pillow at his face when he’s still talking as Katai gets ready for bed. He’ll accept a lot of Doppo’s quirks, but a man needs his sleep.
The island is stunningly gorgeous. From the moment Katai gets off the ferry, he knows it’s one of the most beautiful places he’s ever been.
He’s a little concerned that Doppo seems to have entirely stopped breathing, though.
“Hey, you still with me?” He nudges Doppo in the shoulder.
After a moment, Doppo shakes himself out of his awestruck state. “Of course,” he says. “Just had to take in the view for a second.”
That was a long, long second, but as long as Doppo isn’t going to keel over again, Katai’s not worried. “Cause of death: island was too beautiful” would be a weird thing to put in an obituary, so it’s for the best that isn’t an issue.
Doppo wants to do everything, and preferably all at once. Katai’s tired of being on a boat, so they decide to put off whale watching for later, instead choosing to head to a beach and try out snorkeling.
It takes Katai a bit to get the hang of it and not worry too much about running out of air. After a while, he looks to see how Doppo is doing, and-
Something that Katai did not know about Doppo until this moment: dolphins apparently love him. That seems like closer than a wild animal should be willing to get to a human? But they’re just swimming along completely peacefully. They are chilling.
Eventually, the dolphin bumps its snout against Doppo before swimming off. Katai really wishes he had a waterproof camera right now.
The first words out of Katai’s mouth when they’re both out of the water and able to talk are, “When did you become friends with dolphins.”
Doppo shrugs his shoulders. “They’re used to humans swimming here and not hurting them, so they aren’t afraid of us. I didn’t do anything special.” Despite how casually he’s speaking, his eyes are glittering with delight.
“You dork,” Katai says, with as much affection as Doppo deserves. “You just don’t want me to know about your secret dolphin girlfriend.”
Doppo grins and says, “You’re the one who was flirting with the tour guide on the ferry earlier.”
“She was into me!”
“I asked her if she wanted me to dump you overboard and she had to think about it.”
Katai gasps in horror. “You traitor! I thought we were friends!”
“We are,” Doppo says, already starting to walk back towards the bus. “Maybe I just want to keep you all to myself.”
By the time Katai processes that, Doppo is out of earshot.
“H-hey, what’s that supposed to mean? Come back here! You can’t just say something weird like that and then leave, dammit, wait up!”
