Being yanked abruptly out of a novel that Black Cat in the Rue Morgue had transported him to before he’s finished solving the mystery is less pleasant than leaving the normal way, not to mention unsatisfying, and Ranpo is about to yell at Poe when he notices the probable reason Poe pulled him out - someone’s ringing Poe’s doorbell over and over again.

“You didn’t expect other company,” Ranpo says, picking himself off the couch he’d been reading on, and Poe shakes his head. “Someone from the apartment building or someone trying to get you to buy something wouldn’t make themselves seem rude before you even open the door, but someone from the mafia would have broken in by now instead of just ringing the doorbell…”

He reaches for his glasses, but Poe whispers, “Stay here,” and approaches the door. He unlocks it and opens it a crack, then all the way.

Ranpo’s alarmed by Poe being suddenly tackled with enough force to make him stumble backwards - who wouldn’t be, considering the lives they both lead? - but it’s almost immediately apparent that it’s a hug and not an attack. A woman who looks a little younger than Poe has her face buried in his chest, while a man a bit older than him stands outside wearing a fond expression. They all bear a certain resemblance - dark and messy hair, long limbs, long fingers, dark eyes that are actually visible on them without bangs in the way.

Siblings, Ranpo thinks, and relaxes a bit.

Poe recovers enough to speak again. “You didn’t tell me you were coming to visit,” he says, patting the woman gently on the back as she continues to cling to him. “Come in! Err, I already have company, but it should be alright…”

“When we found out that my ship would be headed to Yokohama while you were here, Rose thought it would be fun to surprise you with a visit,” the man says as he steps inside. His gaze lights on Ranpo immediately, and he smiles. “This is that Ranpo you’ve been telling me so much about, Edgar?”

Edgar’s face is visibly red underneath his mass of hair. He nods. “Oh, Ranpo, this is my older brother, Henry, and my younger sister, Rosalie. Henry, Rose, this is Edogawa Ranpo, my… erm…”

He’s apparently at a loss to describe the nature of their relationship, so Ranpo decides to take pity on him and speaks up. “He’s mentioned me to you, but he’s never mentioned you to me.”

Not that much pity.

Henry doesn’t seem offended and merely shrugs. “There’s not much reason to mention siblings who are across the globe to your boyfriend.”

Poe - Edgar, since they’re all Poes - looks like he could currently rival Dazai in wanting to die. “Th-that isn’t it, it’s just - we’ve only recently reconciled, so it hasn’t come up yet, I was going to-”

Rosalie finally pries herself off of Edgar. “Are you treating my brother nice?” she asks Ranpo, with an expression of suspicion. “He’s very smart, but he’s also very dumb.”

It’s not a bad way to describe Edgar. Ranpo grins and says, “Well, he hasn’t been complaining!”

“Except yesterday,” Edgar mumbles, just loud enough for Ranpo to hear him.

“Karl ate my candy, of course I’m going to get back at him,” Ranpo shoots back.

Edgar scowls. “Of course he ate your candy, he’s a raccoon and you left it unwrapped! You brought that on yourself, don’t blame Karl.”

Rosalie listens to them go back and forth for a bit before interrupting. “I’m glad. You two really love each other, so everything’s just fine.”

Edgar and Ranpo immediately fall silent, Edgar too flustered to speak and Ranpo just too confused about how she came to that conclusion from the available evidence.

Henry chuckles. “Well, I’m glad you’re doing alright. We’ll be in port for a week, Edgar, so call me when you’re free and we’ll catch up properly over dinner, alright? I’ll let you get back to whatever you were doing together.”

“Ah - alright. It’s good to see you two.” Edgar sounds dazed.

“Bye, Edgar,” Rosalie says, and kisses the top of his head. “Bye, Ranpo.” She looks like she might try to do the same to him, but Henry steers her away first before that incredibly awkward show of physical affection can come to pass.

When they’re out the door, Edgar says, “...I’m sorry, but I think I might put off the mystery game for a bit.” When Ranpo shrugs like ‘it can’t be helped’, Edgar sits down on the couch next to Ranpo, rubbing his eyelids behind his bangs.

“Siblings,” Ranpo says, more as a prompt for Edgar to start talking about them than as actual conversation.

“They’re both very sweet people,” Edgar replies. “Henry is a better writer than I am - we’ve collaborated with each other a few times - but he doesn’t have an Ability, so it’s me that ended up being recruited by the Guild.”

Ranpo doubts that he’s really the more skilled writer, considering that Edgar is a professional author and he hasn’t heard Henry’s name at all before this, but awe of older siblings is something that doesn’t necessarily rely on facts.

“Henry’s a sailor, and he’s taking care of Rose since she can’t take care of herself, so I don’t see either of them very often, but we exchange letters and phone calls and it’s always nice to see them in person. Just… they can be a little overwhelming at times.” He chuckles, a bit nervously. “I suppose it’s my turn to ask when I get to meet your family, isn’t it?”

Ranpo tilts his head. “What are you talking about?” he asks, in utter bafflement. “You’ve already met the whole Agency.”

Edgar pauses, before smiling wide. “You’re right, I have. Never mind.”
