Summary: Musha and Takiji get married.
Notes: Prompt: "marriage". Title is based off of Musha's novel "A Happy Man".
If Musha is nervous, Takiji knows that something serious is going on. Takiji’s seen Musha handle almost everything with total confidence, from whether they’d ultimately succeed in their goal (“of course we will!”) to an enormous bug in the library (“stand back, I’ll swat it!”) to everything that came up since they’ve started dating (too embarrassing to remember right now). So if Musha is visibly nervous, then the situation must be dire.
“What’s wrong?” Takiji asks, interrupting Musha’s rambling about the library’s garden.
Musha jolts a little. “Nothing’s wrong! Why would anything be wrong? Ahaha...”
“You’re nervous,” Takiji replies. “That’s not like you.” It’s not like him to be so direct either, but in times of crisis, he can’t afford to avoid the issue.
“It’s not a bad nervous,” Musha says. His cheeks are a little red and he’s staring at the floor. “It’s a good nervous! A really good nervous, because it’s important, but it’s a good thing. I just want to do it right and I’m not sure how.”
Takiji thinks. He still doesn’t know what the issue in question is, but... “Usually, you’d just do it however you wanted and everyone else would follow after you,” he says. “That works for you.”
Musha nods, swallows around the lump in his throat, and says, “I love you, Takiji, please marry me?”
...That.
That was not what Takiji expected. He finds himself staring at Musha with wide eyes. The first answer he can manage to croak out is, “...Really? You want to marry me?”
“Of course!” There’s that determination Musha’s known for, that Takiji loves so much. “You’re a wonderful person and I love you! I want to make you happy! And I want to stay with you forever! I don’t want to be with anybody else besides you, so if you’ll have me, I…!” He falters for a moment. “I don’t know if I can make you happy as much as you deserve, but I want to try, and keep trying to make you more and more happy. So… so…!”
Takiji pulls Musha to his chest into a tight embrace. There’s only one reply he could possibly give to that. “Yes. I’ll marry you.”
He can feel the force of Musha’s smile, even as his shirt is wet by tears.
They can’t legally be married for a number of reasons - not technically existing is more pressing than both being men - but whether something is legal or not has never stopped Takiji before, not when it’s important.
As far as wedding officiants, the author with the most qualifications would be Kenji. Neither Musha nor Takiji would consider themselves especially Buddhist, but Kenji had jumped up and down when they mentioned planning the wedding and said, “I can help! I know how to do a Buddhist marriage blessing!” and after seeing him so excited, there was really no way they were going to deny him the opportunity to participate.
That makes things somewhat simpler, since registering the marriage is impossible. They set a date for the wedding, mostly so that the chief librarian can make sure to be there - everyone is invited, close friends alongside writers they’ve only spoken to in passing.
The ‘wedding’ goes like this:
Musha looks at Takiji, smiles so wide Takiji thinks it must hurt, and says, “So we’re married now?”
Takiji nods. “We’re married.”
And so they’re married.
At the ceremony afterwards, Kenji stands in front of a small shrine (Takamura carved the statue of Buddha specifically for the occasion) and has them recite short vows to love and respect each other, to be faithful and kind. Takiji thinks no words have ever left his mouth so easily - they feel like as much a part of him as the book that now makes up his soul.
He then leads the rest of the authors in saying a few blessings for the newlyweds. Sunao is crying, and Sunao is not a quiet crier, but no one tries to shush him.
Takiji isn’t expecting the swarm of congratulations after they leave the shrine. He doesn’t know how many times he’s given well-wishes, only that it feels like there can’t possibly be that many authors in the library.
Sunao hugs him, having wiped some of the tears off his face but still so overjoyed that he seems like he might start sobbing again at any second. “Congratulations! Never thought I’d see the day you got yerself hitched!”
Shigeharu wears a smile wider than any Takiji’s ever seen on his face before. “I’m so happy for you. May your future be a bright one.”
Naoya looks like he would ruffle Takiji’s hair the same as he did to Musha a few minutes prior, but finding himself thwarted by Takiji’s hood, he pulls him into a hug instead. “Tell me if he’s giving you any trouble and we’ll have a talk, alright? Congrats.”
Authors he doesn’t know well but Musha knows (Arishima, bright-eyed and wide awake, wishes them happiness together), authors neither of them know all that well (Dazai, who hasn’t glared at Naoya once today, tells him it was a beautiful ceremony), everyone is here to hope for their happiness as a married couple. It’s overwhelming, but in the best possible way.
Eventually, after being congratulated by the chief librarian and given some of his best sake as a wedding gift, Takiji manages to retreat to his room. A room he now shares with Musha - they haven’t moved all of Musha’s things in yet, but it was decided that they should sleep in the same bed from now on. It isn’t as though they haven’t done that before, but sleeping with your boyfriend and sleeping with your husband are different things.
Musha flops down face first onto the bed. He’d gotten dressed up for the ceremony and he probably shouldn’t be sleeping in those clothes, but if he feels anything like Takiji does he’s too tired to care.
Takiji curls up close to him. “Musha?”
Musha lifts his head a little. “Takiji?”
“Is it alright if we don’t consummate the marriage tonight? I’m tired.” He understands it’s traditional, but he’s just spoken to way, way too many people today for him to want to do anything but sleep right now.
Musha laughs softly. “That’s fine, I’m exhausted too. We’ll have plenty of chances to do that. For now...” He leans in to lightly kiss Takiji’s lips, then pulls away with a smile. “Goodnight, husband of mine.”
“Goodnight. Sweet dreams.”
