Summary: Ranpo and Yakumo lose track of time.
Notes: Today, in 'cute ships I don't write much'.

In Ranpo’s defense, there isn’t an easily visible clock in his room.

Then again, the reason there isn’t a clock is because he was tinkering with his last week to see if he could make it run backwards to assist with a prank, and ended up breaking the thing entirely. So it’s still his fault. Nevertheless: the only functional clock is a tiny one that sits by his bed and is almost impossible to read from any distance, that he keeps around solely to use as an alarm. If he’s distracted by anything, he doesn’t check the time.

And what could be more distracting than talking about mysteries with Yakumo? Yakumo had asked to speak about them in private - after all, they wouldn’t want to spoil the solutions for anyone else! - and Ranpo had readily invited Yakumo into his room to discuss mysteries to their heart’s content.

Discussion of locked room mysteries: Ranpo speaks highly of the excitement of solving the impossible mystery, while Yakumo complains that they’re overused and thus have lost some of their impact.

Discussions of inverted mysteries: Yakumo argues that finding out how the criminal will be caught can be as compelling as finding out who the criminal was, and Ranpo doesn’t disagree.

Discussion of the merits of hard-boiled detectives versus cozier stories: both of them agree that they have their place, and one isn’t necessarily better than the other just because it’s darker in tone.

Discussion of supernatural mysteries: Yakumo says that in a ‘mystery’ as opposed to a ‘ghost story’, the rules have to be set out in order for the reader to have a chance at discovering the sequence of events on their own, but they don’t necessarily have to be the rules of Earth; Ranpo mentions writing a mystery featuring the spirits of books and Yakumo says he’d like to read it. Ranpo decides to himself that Yakumo will be the very first person he shows it to.

Sometime in the middle of their talk about capers, Yakumo yawns into his sleeve and asks, “Do you have the time?”

“Allow me to check.” It takes a second to check his alarm clock, but less than a second to be embarrassed by discovering - “Oh dear. It’s past four in the morning. I lost track of time entirely while we were talking…”

“As did I, as did I. Our conversation was simply too ‘engrossing’ for me to think of the hour.” Yakumo rises up from his seat on the floor on shaky legs. “I am not quite sure I can walk back to my room without falling asleep in the hallway…”

“It can’t be helped,” Ranpo says with a smile and a shake of his head. “You can have my bed for the night.”

Smiling, Yakumo replies, “Thank you, very ‘gracious’ of you.” He promptly flops facefirst onto Ranpo’s bed. “Goodnight, Ranpo-san.”

Ranpo suppresses a chuckle, and goes to tuck Yakumo in. He means to sleep on the floor - he has extra blankets and pillows from the last time he had a ghost story-telling sleepover - but Yakumo’s grip on his wrist stops him from moving away. “Eh?”

“Your bed is big enough for two.” Yakumo’s voice is somewhat muffled by the pillow.

“Ah… if you insist.” With suddenly pink cheeks, Ranpo pulls the sheets back enough to climb in next to Yakumo. “Goodnight, Yakumo-san.”

Yakumo is something of a cuddler: Ranpo discovers this when he wakes in the morning with Yakumo’s face pressed up against his shoulder and his arms slipped around Ranpo’s waist. His steady breathing says that he’s still asleep, smiling softly at some dream.

While trying not to jostle Yakumo, Ranpo reaches out to shut off his alarm.

He’s in no rush to disentangle himself. Yakumo can sleep in for as long as he wants, and they’ll both lose track of time.
