Genre: Fluff

Summary: The inner Atsushi can tolerate Kyouka more easily than he tolerates most people.
Notes: I would love to see more Atsushi and Kyouka interactions in BunAru fanworks.

The burden of dealing with idiots falls on the ‘outer’ Atsushi. If the ‘inner’ Atsushi were to take that responsibility, there would be more dead idiots and more problems for them both. So it’s better if the outer Atsushi is the only one to handle that task. As for the inner Atsushi, he’ll watch.

That’s his role: to watch, and to step in swiftly when his protection is necessary. He sleeps only when their body sleeps, and spends the rest of his time alert and ready to intervene, no matter how tiresome those his other half chooses to talk to are.

To call Izumi Kyouka tiresome and an idiot is perhaps a bit unfair. His obsession with cleanliness is absurd, but there’s no denying that he’s an excellent writer and a talented combatant. The outer Atsushi looks up to him; the inner Atsushi supposes that he can tolerate him more easily than he tolerates most people. When Kyouka warns him in battle out of genuine concern, the inner Atsushi will thank him, if only because Kyouka believes that the Atsushi who fights at his side and the Atsushi who admires him are one in the same.

Revealing the truth would be a nuisance for them, especially the outer Atsushi. The inner Atsushi doesn’t care as much what the other writers think, but he’ll act to spare his other half pain in all ways.

That’s what has him resting in the infirmary, rather than immediately returning control to the outer Atsushi. Being damaged so badly is painful, more painful than what he’s willing to inflict on the more delicate personality. Staying in the infirmary isn’t much of a burden: Atsushi can handle the pain, and most of the time, no one comes to bother him while he rests.

Most of the time.

“Nakajima-san, are you awake?”

Atsushi considers pretending to be asleep and weighs it against the benefits of being able to glare at Kyouka for bothering him. He opens his eyes. “Unfortunately.”

“I’ve heard that you take being this close to breaking down particularly badly, so I thought I’d try to help,” Kyouka says. He’s carrying… is that a stuffed white tiger? Isn’t his interest in rabbits?

Atsushi’s bafflement only grows when Kyouka sets the tiger plush on his bed. “What?”

“I’m aware it seems a bit childish, but…” Kyouka glances away, apparently embarrassed. “Having a stuffed animal to hold helps me not to snap at everyone when I’m like this.”

Everyone else has assumed that Atsushi is more snappish because he’s in pain and distress from being in a weakened state, rather than because he’s a different person, Atsushi realizes. It makes sense. It also means that the well-meaning gesture won’t change anything. Atsushi is hardly going to be less annoyed at everyone because someone gave him a toy.

But it is well-meaning. Atsushi supposes he can hardly fault Kyouka for trying.

“Thank you,” he mutters. “I’ll be fine.”

Kyouka smiles at him, warm and gentle. “I’m glad you like it. I’ll let you get your rest now.”

Once Kyouka has left the infirmary, Atsushi scoffs. Like it? It’s just a stuffed animal. Even if it were cute, he’s not someone who’s moved by cuteness. He would throw it away, but getting up seems like unnecessary effort, and Kyouka would take offense if he found out.

The tiger is small enough that he can just have it lying next to him and ignore its existence while he sleeps. The other Atsushi can deal with it upon their awakening.

He’s not going to even think about it, much less hug it.

Absolutely not.

…A few hours later, Atsushi awakens to find himself in an infirmary bed, cuddling an unfamiliar stuffed tiger. “…Did ‘he’ get this? It’s really cute… he has good taste.”
