Two in the morning, and the only sounds in the detective agency are Kunikida typing and Haruno pouring coffee.

She sets the coffee cup next to Kunikida, who mutters ‘thank you’ and takes it without looking away from his computer screen. Even while he takes a drink, he’s still typing one-handed.

Only after he’s a quarter through his coffee does he pause for a moment, as if just realizing: “Haruno, you should have gone home by now.”

“So should you,” Haruno replies, by now over at the filing cabinets.

Kunikida resumes typing. “Breaks are unnecessary for me. If I don’t write this report tonight, I might forget details of the case by the time it’s finished.”

“It’d be too depressing to be here by yourself in the middle of the night,” says Haruno. She flips through the folder marked ‘SUPPLIES’ until she gets to a paper that doesn’t match their actual stores. “So I’ll stay as long as you do.”

“I appreciate the thought.” The click-clack of Kunikida’s computer seems louder than it ever does in the daytime. “But a healthy sleep schedule is important for functioning at one’s best.”

Haruno raises an eyebrow. “If I told you that, would I be able to get you to go home?”

The fact that Kunikida doesn’t answer says enough. Haruno sighs and sits down to correct their documentation.

A full hour later, Kunikida is still typing his report, but Haruno has run out of productive ways to use her time. She’s checked all the files that are easy to spot errors on, she’s made sure the agency’s schedule is correct, and she’s poured Kunikida who knows how many cups of coffee. All that’s left is-

“Your job doesn’t include cleaning,” Kunikida says.

Haruno could swear he didn’t even glance at her picking up the window cleaner. “I know, I know, but…” She laughs softly, glancing away from him. “If I stop working and sit down, I’m going to fall asleep right away!”

“That’s only more evidence that you need to rest-”

“No.” Haruno sets to work wiping the inside of their windows.

After another half hour, Kunikida announces, “I’m done.” He saves, turns his computer off, and rises from his chair.

Then he starts to sway. Haruno hurries to support him from one side before he can collapse onto the floor.

“I thought this might happen… Even you’re human, you know?” She throws his arm over her shoulder. “Kunikida, can you walk if I support you?”

No answer. Kunikida is, to all accounts, asleep on his feet.

“Sheesh…” Without Kunikida’s help, the only method of moving him is slowly dragging him forward. “I should have brought a cart or something There’s no way I’m getting you all the way to your room myself.”

And there’s no way she’s waking someone else up at half past three in the morning to help her, so Kunikida’s room is out. With some effort - Kunikida is no lightweight in any sense of the word - Haruno manages to drag him over to the office’s couch. A cushion is placed under his head and her coat is used as a makeshift blanket.

“That’s as much as I can manage… Well, it can’t be any less ideal than passing out on the hard floor, so even if he complains it’s fine.”

Sleep is catching up to Haruno quickly now that her self-appointed task is complete. Rather than risk collapse on the way back to her own room, she settles for returning to her chair and resting her head on her desk.

Maybe if she just rests for a second, she’ll have the energy to walk home-

When she wakes, it’s in an unfamiliar room, and the afternoon sun is doing its best to get through the heavy blinds.

She sits bolt upright. The layout is the same as the agency dorms, but plenty of apartment complexes have the same ones, so she could feasibly be anywhere. Her own room definitely isn’t so neat and clean-

There’s a note stuck on the wall directly in front of her face.

‘Sleeping in a chair can lead to back problems. You should try to sleep in a bed whenever possible.

-Kunikida

P.S. Thank you.’
