When Atsushi comes to, his mind is quiet. Empty.
He remembers, as distantly as if it had been a dream, his other half protecting him from that tiger Taint. He remembers its jaws closing in on the other’s neck, and that horrible crunching sound.
It doesn’t feel real, but the absence of his other half in his mind is a terrible weight.
“He’s gone,” Atsushi says, and pulls the covers over his head.
Tomorrow he will fight, chasing anything of his other self that lingers here. They were never meant to be alone, him just as much as the other.
