Summary: Ritsuka gets shoes from Baobhan Sith for her birthday.
Notes:
"Here, this is a present. Your shoes are all for work. You should have at least one pair like this. …Huh? What's with that face? It's your birthday so isn't it natural to give you a gift? It's common sense, common sense."
After Baobhan Sith stomps off in a huff, Ritsuka is left turning the shoes she gave her over in her hands. They're high heels, a bright red nearly as vibrant as Baobhan Sith's hair. Her feet hurt a little just looking at them.
When would she ever wear these?
She can't run in them. If she was ever attacked while wearing them she'd be a goner for sure. They're tall, but they'd slip too easily in snow or mud, so they're not good for that environment. She could wear them in the Wandering Sea, but if she's called on to Rayshift on short notice, she'd have to go back to her room and change first, and who knows how important the time wasted could be?
She doesn't even know how to walk in heels. She'd fall flat on her face. Baobhan Sith would laugh at her and she couldn't even be mad about it.
But they're pretty. Fancier than anything else she has in her closet. Even if there's no occasion where she would put them on, if she has a moment, she can at least stop and look at them and imagine herself wearing them. Imagine being a person who would wear them.
"Thank you," she calls out, even though Baobhan Sith is long out of earshot.
They're not even that fancy, is the thing.
They're not shoes that Baobhan Sith designed herself, or ones she put a lot of effort into making. They're an extremely basic design for high heeled shoes that you could find in any store on Earth, under normal circumstances. But Ritsuka looked at her like she'd carved shoes out of the Hope Diamond and handed them to her.
They're just some averagely nice shoes. And Ritsuka is an average girl. Averagely pretty, nothing special compared to her Servants. If she lived a different life, she'd wear those shoes with an averagely nice dress, meet an averagely nice guy who remembers her birthday and does the dishes when he's asked, and settle down for an averagely happy life.
Instead she's here, wiping out entire worlds to save her own, so used to nightmare and horror that she thinks Baobhan Sith is good company.
None of that is Baobhan Sith's fault, so she doesn't understand why she feels bad thinking about it. She doesn't even feel bad about things that are her fault half the time.
But, whatever. It's Ritsuka's birthday, so she needed a gift, and she gave her something she knew Ritsuka didn't already have. There's nothing more to it than that.
