When Camazotz asks what they want in return for chocolate, Ritsuka has to think about it.

They've received all sorts of gifts from his Servants. Homemade food, flowers, jewelry… A loaded gun… It would be easy to say that they'll accept anything if it's from Camazotz, and it wouldn't even be a lie.

But, Camazotz wants to get them something they want, and such gestures are not so frequent from Camazotz that they would waste them.

"…Do you know how to give someone a tattoo?"

"Of course," says Camazotz. "A fine choice. I have often thought that your skin lacked adornment. Would you dedicate yourself to a god? Inscribe yourself with symbols of strength for your battles to come?"

Ritsuka shakes their head. "I want a butterfly."

It is a curious fact that butterflies represent roughly the same thing to the Japanese and the Ka'an. Perhaps there is some truth to the thought that the souls of the dead take that form. Perhaps it's merely a coincidence.

"-I understand. You, of all humans, should be covered in butterflies." Camazotz's voice is melancholy. "I would not wish it on my most hated enemy, but for you, I will bind the mark of the dead to your skin."

"Thank you, Camazotz."

One peach-colored butterfly, inked on the arm, with a name just below it. There may come a day when they too begin to forget the faces of all those that have died to keep them alive. Even if that happens, Ritsuka wants to cling onto these precious memories in any way they can.
