Winter is not Koichi’s favorite season. Not by far.
He hears he has it a little better than tall people, who have more surface area to lose heat from, but that’s not much consolation. Today it’s freezing even without considering wind chill and the snow that continues to fall, and with that in the equation it’s incredibly unpleasant.
He wants to get inside as soon as possible. Koichi pulls his scarf tighter and hurries toward home.
There are certain people he has to stop for if he sees them, even in cold weather. Yukako is one of them. She’s wearing a coat like any sane person would be, but doesn’t have her hood up, and still she’s smiling… though that could just be because she saw him.
“Good afternoon,” she says. “Can I walk with you?”
He nods, knowing that she won’t take no for an answer anyway. “Yukako, aren’t you cold?” he asks.
“Hm? Not really,” answers Yukako. At his disbelieving stare, she amends, “Well, it is cold, but you stop noticing after you’ve been out a long time.”
“That just means you’re getting frostbite! Here.” Koichi takes off his scarf and hands it to her. “You can borrow this. My house isn’t far from here anyway, so I won’t be cold for much longer.”
“You’re so thoughtful, Koichi.” She bends to kiss him softly, and somehow he still has enough heat left in him to make his face feel warm. After straightening up and wrapping the scarf around her neck, she asks, “Don’t you feel peaceful when there are snowflakes falling gently like this?”
“Not really,” he says. “I guess it is pretty, when you’re looking from inside where it’s warm.”
“But then you can’t catch the snow,” she says, frowning briefly. “Here, I’ll show you.”
Yukako uses her Stand to extend her long black hair outwards. It soon becomes peppered with snowflakes, some that melt and disappear but most that stay, looking like sparkling white stars in a vast, dark sky.
Koichi watches for a moment, with a sudden sense of awe. “That looks amazing... But you know I can’t do that with my hair like you can.”
Yukako laughs softly. “Just catch them in your hand.”
Koichi lifts a gloved hand and lets snowflakes drift onto it. He’s heard every snowflake is unique, but they’re small enough that he can’t tell the difference without a microscope. It’s not nearly as beautiful as Yukako’s display just was. To him, it’s just snow.
“Isn’t it something?” asks Yukako.
To her, it’s something meaningful, and to him, her happiness is something that means more than he could say.
“It is,” Koichi agrees. “But, you’re still catching frostbite, so maybe you should come in and warm up when we get to my house.”
Yukako smiles and takes his gloved hand in hers. “I would love to.”
The excuse to invite her over and share blankets and hot chocolate isn’t bad, either. Maybe winter isn’t his least favorite season, after all.
