“Pie delivery,” calls out a familiar voice. Etihw and and Kcalb pause in their Othello game to look over at the doors, one of which Chelan is pushing open for Dialo to carry a large apple pie inside.

“Thank you!” says Etihw, floating down to the ground. Kcalb climbs down as well, silent but looking a tiny bit more pleased than normal.

When Chelan and Dialo reach the end of the long hall, Dialo hands Etihw the still-warm pie. “It has been a while, hasn’t it? We thought we’d make the delivery ourselves, since Yosafire is pulling weeds today for forgetting her homework yet again.”

Etihw chuckles and sets the pie aside. “You don’t think you should save her some?”

“Oh, there’s another smaller pie at home for her and the others. Limiting her portions as a punishment might get her to remember next time… but probably not,” says Dialo.

Chelan turns her head toward Dialo a little.

That grabs Dialo’s attention. “What is it, Chelan?”

Chelan’s lips move the tiniest fraction, but as far as Etihw and Kcalb can hear, no sound leaves them.

Dialo nods and turns back to Etihw and Kcalb. “Chelan would like to know if you’d like a different flavor of pie next time. Blueberry, for example, is quite good.”

“How do you do that?” asks Etihw, head tilted. When Dialo looks at them in confusion, they go on. “Any flavor is fine, but I’ve been meaning to ask: how do you understand what Chelan is saying? I can’t hear a word.”

“Ah.” A smile appears on Dialo’s face. “Equal parts body language, experience, whispering, and psychic connection.”

Etihw pouts at her. “You’re making that last part up, you’re teasing me.”

“Well, think of it this way: does Kcalb really speak that much more than Chelan does?” she asks.

“Not... that quiet,” says Kcalb. When Etihw smiles in his direction, he amends, “Usually.”

“Close enough. I’m sure that if Kcalb was silent for an entire day, Etihw, you’d still be able to tell his thoughts and feelings on any subject that came up,” says Dialo. “It’s much more simple than it looks.”

“But, Kcalb and I have known each other for much longer than you have,” Etihw says. “I’ve had longer to pick up on all his little nervous ticks-”

“Don’t have nervous ticks,” says Kcalb, grumbling. Chelan raises an eyebrow at him, looking dubious, and he falls silent.

“-and in comparison to that, you’ve just met,” finishes Etihw.

“You have a point…” Dialo taps on her chin. “Then, I suppose the only explanation is that our souls have a psychic connection older than us, or something like that. Chelan, shall we return? Yosafire might beat us back if we don’t hurry.”

Chelan nods, and after a quick round of goodbyes, the two of them leave the castle hall.

“...They don’t… know, do they?” asks Kcalb, after a moment.

“I can’t tell.” Etihw shrugs. “Well, they’ll find out one day, and I’m sure they’ll be just as close after that.”
