Oarfish, generally, live in temperate to tropical waters. In other words, Iceberg Isle is somewhere that Tatsumiya can’t go without the aid of magic to heat her up, and she’d have to be careful about it.

“It’s not that great of a place anyway,” says Idate, stubbing out the remains of his cigarette. “There’s only a couple people there I respect at all, and the rest are cowards, weaklings, weakling cowards, or idiots. Or Mafuyu.”

“‘Or Mafuyu’?” asks Tatsumiya.

“Can’t insult kids,” he says. “That’s just pathetic.”

Idate tends to avoid the treasure hunter crew and Tarako, from what she’s seen of him outside of his interactions with her. Then again, he tends to avoid everybody who isn’t her or Samekichi and Wadanohara, and those two he just seems to like teasing.

Tatsumiya nods along. “Who do you respect there?”

“Rock’s my fishing buddy. Pretty grouchy, but not a bad guy. Good shot with a gun, too,” says Idate. “I’d say he’s the only one I ever get along with.”

She’d be lonely on an island with only one person who actually liked her, but that sort of existence seems to suit Idate much better.

“And Rocma…” Idate pauses, reaching for another cigarette. “Is strong. Very strong. Doesn’t let anybody push her around, especially me. You remind me of her sometimes.”

She blinks. “I do?”

“Not in personality, you’re much softer than she is,” he says.

Tatsumiya isn’t sure if that’s a compliment or not. That he’s smiling when he says it doesn’t help her confusion.

“But sometimes. When that shark tried to kill your kid, every time he got a hit in you looked like you wanted to rip him apart. You didn’t look like that when you were defending yourself.”

“Wadanohara’s not my child,” she says, quickly.

“Doesn’t take blood to make somebody your kid,” he replies, lighting his cigarette. “Mafuyu’s not her kid by birth either but she’d tear me a new one if I ever went after her. More than she would usually.”

Tatsumiya doesn’t know what to say to that, so she changes the subject a little. “Is it just those two?”

“Mostly. I’ve got some family up there too. Cute niece, you’d like her. She always seems mad at me, for some reason,” he says with a quick shrug.

“Children are like that at times,” she says, relaxing. “You should bring her down here to visit, if you have the chance.”

“Oh yeah? You want to meet the family?” He grins. “I didn’t know we were at that stage of our relationship already.”

She turns pink. “Well, that is… I-if you want to…”

“Joking. Nagi’s not big on traveling or on any women I talk to, so I think she’d take a pass,” he says. “Besides, I’d rather take my strolls alone and spend my time how I want instead of bring somebody else along and have to keep an eye on them. Especially a kid.”

For some reason, Tatsumiya feels a little disappointed.
