Summary: Atsushi finds out one of Dazai's motives, and takes it badly; Chuuya is definitely here to be a good boyfriend when it comes to how terrible Dazai is.
Notes: Trying not to be RanPoe even though I'm a terrible shipper for that.
Atsushi swallows. It’s a quiet moment in the office, and it’s just the two of them right now, so… “Ranpo-san, can I ask you for some advice?”
“It’s completely different,” Ranpo says, without missing a beat.
That doesn’t follow. “What?”
“You were going to ask me about Poe, right? Since he used to be in the Guild and all.” Ranpo opens his eyes just to roll them. “Except he was never loyal to the Guild, he helped us out while still a member, and he left the Guild when it dissolved. So it’s completely different from your actively loyal to the Mafia, totally willing to beat you up if it comes to that, never going to leave the Mafia by choice boyfriend.”
Atsushi slumps. That all makes sense, but Ranpo had the closest thing to a shared experience in the Agency. “I see. Sorry to bother you. ...What do you mean, ‘by choice’?”
“I mean, if he’s ever called a traitor, by now it’ll have something to do with being involved with you.” Ranpo lets that sink in for a few seconds, then adds, “Why do you think Dazai gave you his number in the first place?”
“...Because he cares about me and wants me to be happy?” Atsushi says in a tiny voice.
Ranpo laughs. It doesn’t make Atsushi feel any better.
By the time Dazai returns to the office, Atsushi has prepared a few words for him. “Dazai-san, I need to talk to you.”
Dazai gives him a carefree smile. “Sure! What’s on your mind?”
“Ranpo-san told me some strange things.” Atsushi keeps his voice level. “Is it true that you gave me Chuuya-san’s number hoping that he’d get kicked out of the mafia for being a traitor?”
“It’d be a nice side benefit,” Dazai says. There’s no shame at all there. “The look on that midget’s face-”
Atsushi punches him in the stomach. It doesn’t have the strength of a tiger behind it, but that just means he doesn’t have to hold himself back. “You absolute jerk!”
While Dazai is still groaning, Atsushi storms out of the office without another word.
There’s only one place he thinks of going. After a quick call to make sure that Chuuya’s at home (he is), Atsushi finds himself on Chuuya’s couch listing all of Dazai’s character flaws.
“He’s terrible,” Atsushi says. “He always thinks things are going to go exactly the way he plans, and he never tells anyone what he’s planning.”
Chuuya nods. He’s petting Atsushi’s back, probably in an effort to calm him down. “He’s the worst.”
“And he’s always using other people in his schemes, and he never thinks about how those people feel about being used!” Atsushi sighs heavily. “I’ve never understood how you feel about him more than I do right now, Chuuya-san.”
“Not that you seeing the light about that shitty waste of bandages isn’t great,” Chuuya replies, “but what the hell did he do to piss you off this badly?”
Atsushi freezes. “He… um…”
He’s saved by the doorbell ringing. Chuuya sighs, and goes to answer the door.
It’s Dazai.
Chuuya doesn’t seem too surprised that Dazai knows where he lives. “Give me one good reason I shouldn’t slam this door in your face, asshole.”
“I’m here to apologize,” says Dazai. “Not to you, obviously.”
Chuuya pauses, then looks back at Atsushi. “Your choice.”
“I’ll come out,” Atsushi says, after a moment. “So you don’t have to let this jerk in your nice apartment.”
He steps outside. Chuuya gives them some more space, but doesn’t close the door.
Atsushi folds his arms. “Well?”
“I’m sorry.” Dazai even bows his head a little. “I’m a manipulative person and I always have been, and that’s not going to change, but manipulating my friends and using their feelings is too much. I really do want you to be happy - even if I don’t understand why you’d be happy with Chuuya.”
After a second, Atsushi lets out a sigh. “Dazai-san… I’ll forgive you if you accept one punishment.”
Dazai looks genuinely relieved. “What’s that?”
“Your punishment is to hear me talk about how great a boyfriend Chuuya-san is and how much better dating him is than dating you would be, for an hour.”
He hears Chuuya let out a snort from inside the apartment.
“Atsushi-kun, you’re not serious, right?” When Atsushi just gives him a look, Dazai sweats. “You’re more cruel than I realized…”
Atsushi smiles. “I must have learned that from you, Dazai-san. So do you accept the punishment?”
“I can take it! It’s fine… just fine, it’s only an hour…” Dazai is muttering to himself now.
“Oh, and Dazai-san, how likely is it that that’ll actually happen?” Atsushi asks. “I need to know if I should warn him.”
“About a five percent chance,” Dazai says. “Mori keeps useful people around.”
Atsushi sighs in relief.
Chuuya sticks his head out. “Are you done here? You’re a third wheel.”
“I don’t want to be anywhere near your gross house anyway,” says Dazai. “It’s infected with your germs, I’ll catch whatever you have and it’ll stunt my growth.”
“Are you twelve?” Chuuya asks.
Dazai scoffs. “On a scale of one to ten.”
Atsushi occasionally wonders what he’s gotten himself into, dating one of his best friends’ ex-partner. This is one of those times.
