Summary: A woman agrees to double suicide with Dazai: Kunikida is suddenly much more worried.
Notes: By request.

“Okay,” says the woman whose hands Dazai is holding, and at first Kunikida parses it as yet another “no”.

It’s only when Dazai looks mildly surprised for a moment before a wide smile breaks across his face that Kunikida realizes - someone actually agreed to double suicide with him.

“Please reconsider, miss,” Kunikida says, stepping forward.  He’s not sure exactly what the expression he’s currently wearing is like, but he suspects there’s no small amount of alarm in there.  “There’s so much to live for, and-”

“Don’t preach to me,” the woman says before he can get very far.  “I’ve heard everything you have to say.  I’ve heard it for years and nothing’s changed.”  She gives Dazai’s hands a squeeze, looking… grateful.  “Thank you.”

“No no, thank you,” says Dazai.  He looks like he couldn’t be happier.  “May I have your number?  We’ll set up a time and place.”

The woman fishes a scrap of paper and a pen out of her purse and writes down a phone number.  “Don’t leave me hanging.”

“I would never,” says Dazai, solemnly.  He accepts the slip of paper, and then Kunikida is dragging him away by the arm.

When they get a significant distance away, Kunikida releases him.  “I can’t believe someone actually agreed to double suicide-”

“I can,” says Dazai.  His smile is hard to read with any amount of confidence in the interpretation.  “Did you think I would ask so many times if it was completely pointless, Kunikida-kun?”

Dazai rarely does pointless things, even if the point is just to annoy Kunikida.  Kunikida knows this.

Instead of answering, he asks, “Are you really planning to…?”

“Of course! I can’t let a lovely woman down so easily, can I?”  Dazai starts to hum a cheery tune.

Kunikida swallows and says nothing at all.

Dazai does come to work the next day, which is something of a relief, but he spends most of the time texting, which is not.  Kunikida glances down as he passes by, when they’re alone during lunch break, and sees that he’s talking to a ‘Miriam’ about drowning versus a gunshot to the head.

Dazai looks up at him when he does.  “My private affairs are private, Kunikida-kun.  I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t peek.”

“I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t plan how to kill yourself in the office, or at all,” Kunikida snaps in reply.

“Hm~  In that case, can I have some time off to-”

“No.”

Dazai sighs.  “You’re so cruel, Kunikida-kun.  You could be a little kinder to me in my last day with you.”

Last day: they plan to do this tomorrow.  They might actually succeed in this tomorrow.  Kunikida doesn’t have time to waste on planning.

“Don’t do this, Dazai.”  His voice comes out rawer than he expected.  “Call it off.”

“And why should I do that?”  Dazai looks at him sharply.  “I’ve wanted this longer than you’ve known me.  Why should I deny it when I’m this close?”

“...You want a pure, clean suicide that doesn’t cause anyone else any inconvenience, don’t you?”  When Dazai nods, Kunikida says, “There’s no such thing.  Not for you.”

Dazai stiffens.

“Killing yourself is going to hurt the people close to you.  It will leave an aching wound that will never completely heal, no matter how many years pass.  If you don’t want to live for yourself, I know I won’t be able to change that, but if you care for any of us at all, then, please-”  Kunikida’s voice breaks on the last word.

After a good few seconds, Dazai says, “I’ll think about it.”

That’s the best Kunikida’s going to get.  He doesn’t press any further.
