Summary: Atsushi eats his birthday cake.
Notes: Birthday fluff for Atsushi!

Atsushi has no control over when he and his other self switch places.

He knows that the other Atsushi is watching him: his presence in the back of Atsushi’s mind is unmistakable. But that other Atsushi takes over when he chooses to, and leaves when he chooses to. If Atsushi barely remembers what happens when he isn’t in charge, it’s impossible for him to take back control.

It’s alright, really. He knows his other self by now to know that he only takes control for combat and leaves when the fighting is over, unless their injuries are particularly serious. Then he stays - to spare Atsushi the pain, perhaps, but Atsushi doesn’t want to assume too much.

Atsushi doesn’t have fear of the other him suddenly taking over unexpectedly, nor of him doing anything irresponsible with their body. Embarrassing, yes - he’s self-conscious about acting like that in front of other writers. But he trusts that other him. He hasn’t caused him harm so far, nor done anything cruel to the other people Atsushi knows. (Not even Ranpo, who tries this Atsushi’s patience.)

Atsushi’s friends in the library remembered his birthday, somehow, though Atsushi’s sure he hasn’t mentioned it since being summoned. The cake looks delicious, and the librarian assures Atsushi that Ranpo wasn’t at all involved in creating it.

It’s hard for Atsushi to read his other self’s mood, but… he thinks he’s happy too, to be remembered and singled out like this.

Around him, all his fellow writers are celebrating - even Yoshikawa, who normally eschews desserts for health reasons, is munching on a piece of birthday cake. Kyouka keeps a close eye on his plate in case anything might taint his slice. Ranpo is sitting with Nankichi, who somehow has gotten icing on his nose.

The cake is delicious, even better than Chuuya’s birthday cake last week, but Atsushi suspects he thinks it tastes better because it’s meant for him. He wonders if the other him can taste it, or if his senses are dulled somewhat when he’s not in control.

Wouldn’t that be sad? The other Atsushi deserves this cake as much as he does. They’re two halves of the same person: their birthday is shared between them.

But his other half won’t come out willingly for any reason but combat, and definitely not for a silly thing like birthday cake. And Atsushi doesn’t know how to call to him and ask if he wants some.

Even so… It should be possible somehow. His other self knows how to do it, after all.

He focuses on the other’s presence, the vague sensation of being watched by someone. It isn’t much, but it’s enough to let Atsushi know he’s there. He can’t physically shove a corner of his mind forward, of course, but if he tries to drag it to the forefront of his thoughts-

“Atsushi?” Kyouka asks. “Is something the matter? Your face fell suddenly.”

The answer that comes is gruff. “...Nothing important. Just someone being ridiculous and sentimental.”

Not even a single bite of cake is left uneaten.
