Summary: Despite being a world away, Atsushi and Kyouka still manage to send birthday gifts to their friends at home. Chuuya sends a few gifts of his own.
Notes: Library AU. The people BunAru Chuuya sends longer notes to are BSD characters he actually met in the RP this is based off of - anyone he sends a shorter note to he either hasn't met and has only heard about, or has only met very briefly.
March 1st, Akutagawa receives a package.
Not in the sense of ‘deliver this package to X location and kill anyone who tries to steal it’, which is how he usually handles packages. Instead, there’s a box covered in wrapping paper with ‘For Akutagawa Ryuunosuke’ written neatly on a tag. It even has a bow.
All packages that come into Port Mafia headquarters are automatically tested for explosives, poisons, and chemical weapons. Even so, Akutagawa considers letting Rashomon eat it rather than opening it up. Who would send him a gift, of all things?
Curiosity eventually overcomes his wariness enough for him to open the box.
It’s a coat. A long black and red coat, with gold buttons. It looks expensive, more so than anything Akutagawa’s ever bought for himself.
There’s also a note.
If your birthday comes
And not one present is found
Who celebrates you?
This year, don’t worry about that.
(Plus, it’s machine-washable.)
Akutagawa feels his lips quirk up into something resembling a smile. The note might be unsigned, but only one person who could possibly send him a present writes poetry.
April 29th, Chuuya finds a box in his office.
It’s addressed to him, and it’s already gone through standard screening, so Chuuya doesn’t hesitate to open it up, vaguely regretting tearing some of the nice wrapping paper in the process.
It’s a hat. A sleek trilby that’s just his style. Included in the box is a handwritten note.
Our birthday today-
Someone worthy to share it
Should get equal joy.
I couldn’t ask for better
As Nakahara Chuuya.
Chuuya snorts with amusement, and wastes no time swapping out his current hat for the gift.
June 19th, Dazai gets a delivery addressed to him at the Agency.
‘Delivery’ might not be the right word, since always-early-to-work Kunikida says the box was just sitting on their doorstep when he got there, but it’s wrapped nicely and addressed to Dazai, so Dazai doesn’t hesitate to tear it open.
The package contains three rolls of bandages, all of them in different bright, colorful patterns. One of them has green checkers, one of them has blue camouflage print, and one of them is pink with a pattern of rabbit faces.
There’s also a note, with three different kinds of handwriting.
Happy birthday, Dazai! I know you didn’t tell us when your birthday was, but the Dazai here has been making a big deal out of it for a while. You probably don’t need any help telling which of these are from Kyouka, but the blue one is from me and the green one is from Chuuya. - Atsushi
Happy birthday. These were the cutest bandages in the store. - Kyouka
Happy birthday, jerk.
Celebrating one year more
Isn’t happy, right?
The people around you, though
Would rather eat cake than mourn.
Dazai sets the note down with a small but genuine smile. He’ll try these out the next time he puts his bandages on.
July 24th, Tanizaki gets a package at the Agency.
After Dazai’s birthday gift last month, Tanizaki isn’t surprised by a package left on their doorstep on his birthday, and he eagerly opens it up.
The box contains two stuffed cats: a tawny one with grey earrings, and a black one with a beauty mark below one eye. It doesn’t take much guesswork to realize they’re supposed to be him and Naomi.
The note attached has two types of handwriting that he recognizes and one that he doesn’t.
Happy birthday! These are from me and Kyouka, and Chuuya too, since he helped us make them. I hope you have a great birthday and I’m sorry I can’t be there to see it. - Atsushi
Happy birthday. We hope Naomi likes them too. - Kyouka
Friendly advice: if anybody ever claims to be a different Tanizaki Junichirou, shut the door in his face, it’s better than dealing with him. - Chuuya
Tanizaki hugs both cats tight to his chest.
August 27th, Kenji gets a birthday gift.
Celebrating birthdays is a tradition that they do have in his village - though they were more likely to hold feasts rather than carefully wrap presents. So when he’s given the box with his name on it, he opens it up as quickly as possible.
He finds a shiny flute and a book about how to play it, as well as a note.
Happy birthday! You’ve always really liked music, so I thought it would be nice if you could make some yourself. -Atsushi
We decided that this would probably be easier to put in a box than a guitar. Happy birthday. - Kyouka
Have fun! - Chuuya
Kenji puts the flute to his lips and blows into it as hard as he can. Everyone else in the agency winces.
August 30th, Kunikida is expecting the package that he finds on the Agency’s doorstep. It’s his birthday today, and while he doesn’t ask for much, some acknowledgement is nice.
The box contains three professionally-bound books. All of them have his name listed as the author, and none of them are books he’s ever seen before - “Spring Birds”, “The Musahi Plain”, and “The Bamboo Gate”. Sometimes he forgets that he’s an author in some other world, until he’s reminded like this.
The note attached is brief:
Happy birthday! We didn’t know what to get you, but the Kunikida here writes really good poetry and short stories, and we thought you might like them. - Atsushi
We’ll get you different books if you don’t like them. We have a lot of books. -Kyouka
Shimazaki suggested pink hair dye as a gift. Shimazaki is a goddamn idiot and you’re lucky you don’t know him. - Chuuya
Kunikida makes a note to himself to start reading the books immediately after work is over.
October 21st, Ranpo opens the box in the agency without even looking at the label first.
It’s obviously for him, it’s his birthday! It’s only confirmed when the box is filled with sweets.
A note is stuck between some fruity chews and a box of pocky.
Happy birthday, Ranpo! We couldn’t remember what your favorite type of candy was, so we just got you everything. - Atsushi
Don’t eat this all at once, you’ll get sick. - Kyouka
Author Ranpo tried to convince us to let him rig the box so it’d explode into glitter when you opened it. You should thank us for telling him to fuck off. - Chuuya
Ranpo starts munching on a piece of candy without another moment’s delay.
December 7th, Yosano is expecting the box at the Agency, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t happy to see it.
It’s been quite a while since Atsushi and Kyouka left for a more peaceful life, and she wishes for the best for them. She misses them at times, and it’s nice to know that even now they’re thinking of her and the rest of the detectives.
The box contains three hairpins, all shaped like flowers - a pink and white hibiscus, a red rose, and a white lily. It also contains a note.
Happy birthday, Yosano-sensei! We hope you like these and maybe wear them sometimes. - Atsushi
The rose is from me, the white one is from Atsushi, and the pink one is from Chuuya. - Kyouka
Thanks for keeping these two alive this long. - Chuuya
Yosano brushes her fingers over the petals of the flowers and decides which one to put in her hair first.
January 10th-
Kouyou receives a nicely-wrapped package, and the label with her name on it is clearly written with Kyouka’s handwriting, so she doesn’t hesitate to open it up.
The gift is an umbrella, a white one. The note attached is also Kyouka’s handwriting - mostly.
Happy birthday. I hope you’re doing well - we don’t get much news about the Port Mafia where I am, but Dazai would have told us if he knew something had happened to you.
I’m alright. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you where I was going, but I’m safe now. I won’t have to fight any longer, and I’m living just fine in the light. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me, but you don’t have to worry about me anymore.
I think you can conceal a blade in this umbrella too. - Kyouka
Whoever told Kyouka that she couldn’t live a normal life is a goddamn liar, and also an asshole. She’s thriving. - Chuuya, but not that one
Kouyou smiles wide. The umbrella is a far less important gift than the knowledge that Kyouka is doing well.
On the same day, across the city, Fukuzawa opens up a neatly-wrapped box. He rarely receives birthday presents, and he already knows who the gift must be from.
There are two paintings: one of Fukuzawa and Atsushi, and one of Fukuzawa and Kyouka. Both of his subordinates are smiling, and in both pictures he looks less grim than normal, nearly smiling. Neither of the pictures look professionally done, but both of them have the sincerity of feeling to them that eclipses any other metric of quality.
Happy birthday, and thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me. I know I might be in a different world now, but I won’t ever forget the kindness you showed me. If you ever need any help, send a message and I’ll come running. - Atsushi
Thank you for believing that I could live life as a good person when almost no one else did. - Kyouka
If you’re responsible for helping these two long enough that they could stand on their own, then you’ve got my thanks too. Musha and Takamura send their birthday wishes - they helped Atsushi and Kyouka with the paintings, but all the actual painting was done by your ex-subordinates. - Chuuya
The paintings are immediately tacked up onto the agency’s wall, and they will never come down again.
