“Dazai, can you drive me somewhere?” Kosuke asks, one otherwise uneventful afternoon.

Dazai shuffles on the couch to face him more fully, ignoring the TV for the moment - it’s just on a program about how to cook curry, nothing important. “Kosuke, you know I’m not allowed to drive you anywhere!”

“Your driving can’t be that bad,” Kosuke says, with the insistence of someone who’s never been in a car with Dazai at the wheel in his fourteen years of life.

“It definitely can! Anyway, it’s your dad’s orders, so~” Dazai pats the seat next to him, and Kosuke joins him on the couch. “Now, I know you know I’m not allowed to do that for you, so why did you ask? Is it something that you need taken care of in the next two hours before your dad gets home?”

Kosuke shakes his head.

“No? Then…” Dazai gasps in mock horror. “Could it be that it’s something you think your dad wouldn’t approve of and you’re trying to use me to get around him?!”

Bingo. A look of guilt crosses Kosuke’s face. “Well… kind of…”

“You’re very resourceful, but that’s not going to work on me,” Dazai says, patting Kosuke on the head. “It must be really bad if you don’t want Odasaku to know about it.”

“It’s not bad!” Kosuke says. “It’s just - a thing!” When Dazai raises an eyebrow at him, Kosuke mutters, “It’s a date.”

Dazai’s hand freezes on the top of Kosuke’s head. “Your dad has let you go on group dates before.”

Kosuke clarifies with the words Dazai is hoping he won’t say: “A two person date.”

Dazai has learned plenty over his life, more than some people three times his age know. He knows how to kill a man in at least fifty different ways, and how to make him wish for death in even more. He knows how to break into buildings without being caught and how to make sure that anyone who saw him doesn’t dare speak again. He knows how to manipulate other people to get the exact result he wants.

He does not know how to handle his partner’s children starting to date.

Dazai pulls his hand back, slowly. “I’ll talk about it with your dad when he gets home.” Kosuke still looks guilty, so Dazai adds, “You’re not in trouble, okay? We just need to discuss it.”

“Okay,” Kosuke says, relaxing a little. He hugs Dazai, then runs off to his room.

The two hours until Odasaku gets back seem incredibly long, and Dazai thinks he’ll be able to relax once he hears Odasaku call out, “I’m home,” but when he actually does hear Odasaku at the door, it only makes him tense up.

“Welcome home,” Dazai answers. “When you’re done saying hi to the kids, can I borrow you for a minute?” Odasaku always wants to visually confirm that his children are okay when he gets home from work, and Dazai understands that and won’t take it from him. This isn’t that important, probably, maybe.

“It won’t take long,” Odasaku asks, the concern plain on his face. He’s always been good about seeing through Dazai, better than anyone else. “I’ll be right back.”

Dazai waits in their room for him. When Odasaku comes back and joins him on the bed, he still hasn’t quite gotten his words in order, but this is as prepared as he’s going to get. “Kosuke asked me to drive him to a date.”

Odasaku tenses up. “What did you say?”

“That I’d talk with you about it.” Dazai sighs. “Of all the things I never thought I’d be doing…”

“It’s a two person date,” Odasaku says, and Dazai nods. “No chaperones. Just him and a girl, possibly one we don’t know.”

“He’s fourteen,” Dazai says. “We didn’t have chaperones at fourteen.”

“We were both killing people at fourteen,” Odasaku reminds him. “I don’t think we can use ourselves as models for the kids.”

That’s a point. Dazai sighs and flops back on the bed. “‘Normal’ kids go out on dates around this age, I think? If it isn’t that far… And we’ve let the kids out of our sight before.”

“With teachers and other responsible adults. Another teenager won’t know how to respond if something happens,” Odasaku says. His eyes are furrowed. “It’s not that I don’t want him to grow up normally - I’m just worried about him growing up at all.”

“I know,” Dazai says. There are too many specters in both of their lives for them to feel confident that the kids will reach adulthood. “...What if we secretly followed them?”

Odasaku considers that idea. “He’ll hate that, if he finds out.”

“So we won’t get caught,” Dazai says with a smile. “Or are you worried about being found out by an untrained fourteen-year-old?”

“We did train him a little.”

“Just in self-defense,” Dazai says, dismissively. “Everyone should know how to break out of a choke hold. Anyway, it’s for his own good, he’ll forgive us eventually.”

Odasaku sighs. “...Just a few times. After that, we’ll try letting him actually go out on his own.”

“Deal,” Dazai replies. “But you’re in charge of telling him how to behave on the date and not to get into any hanky-panky, that’s a dad thing.”

Odasaku puffs out a laugh. “Most parents would be more worried about the hanky-panky.”
