The paper in front of Haruno doesn’t make sense. Haruno attributes it to lack of sleep: she’s been working overtime all week dealing with fallout from the Decay of Angels incident.

Rather than try to puzzle it out herself, she looks up at Fukuzawa. “Sorry, what is this? It doesn’t look like a report to fill out…”

“It’s a termination notice,” Fukuzawa says.

Ah. That’s what it looked like. She’s not seeing things after all, that’s good.

Wait.

“…What?! What did I do wrong?” No one told her she screwed something up recently. “If it’s about the wine I can cut back, I haven’t been drinking during work hours I promise-”

“You haven’t done anything wrong,” Fukuzawa interrupts. His expression is more grave than usual, which says a lot when it’s Fukuzawa. “But it’s become too dangerous for you to continue to be associated with us. You’ll be paid a monthly pension, and your records of working here can be erased to give you a better chance at acquiring a new job.”

The protest is out of her mouth before she knows it. “But I don’t want to leave-”

“Your termination is effective today. Please clean your desk before you leave tonight.” No chance for debate: Fukuzawa turns and leaves, leaving Haruno staring at his back.

“…You jerk…”

Of course she understands where she’s coming from. The Agency became wanted criminals, and their name hasn’t entirely been cleared. Association with them makes her suspicious at best. At worst, she could be killed.

Somehow that doesn’t make her feel any better while she’s taking photos off her desk. Only a few of them are just of Mii: the rest are of other members of the Agency. Dazai sleeping on a couch with Mii sleeping on his chest, Naomi holding a plastic ‘Sister of the Year’ trophy, Kenji with a giant birthday cake in front of him… There isn’t an Agency member she doesn’t have a fond memory of recorded here. Even Katai makes an appearance, having somehow convinced Kunikida to join him in a blanket fort.

She packs the photos into her purse with the care that they deserve, as priceless treasures from the happiest years of her life. Sure there was always danger, but…

Hm.

Haruno arrives at the usual time the next morning, takes her usual chair, and starts flipping through reports. She makes no comment about her desk being clear of personal belongings.

A few of the detectives glance her way, but no one brings anything up. Ranpo scoots his chair further away from her desk, probably preparing for-

“Haruno.”

-Fukuzawa to make an appearance, looking none too happy.

Haruno smiles brightly like his gaze isn’t drilling holes in her head. “Good morning, president.”

“I believe I was clear about your termination as an employee.” Fukuzawa ignores the sound of several chairs swiveling to watch the conversation. Naomi turns quickly enough to bang her knee on her desk, and it’s probably only the pain distracting her that keeps her from interjecting immediately.

“Yes, I know. Effective yesterday.” Haruno keeps flipping through the report she was reading.

“Then why are you here?”

“With all due respect, president, I don’t do this job because you pay me. I could have a better-paying, less dangerous job easily.” God knows her mother still wants her to get a respectable job, or at least a job with respectable and eligible male coworkers. “I do this because I care about everyone here and want to help. Even if you stop paying me for it, that hasn’t changed.”

Fukuzawa stares in stony silence.

After a moment, Haruno adds, “Anyway, this job has always been dangerous. There was the time with the two guys from the Guild, the time with Q…”

“That one Ability user turned you into a fly and you almost got swatted,” Naomi adds.

“I forgot that one. Oh, and that one time everyone in the agency caught the actual plague and Yosano couldn’t fix it?” Haruno shakes her head like that would help her forget how gross that Ability was. “The point is, things have always been dangerous for us. Nothing’s changed there.”

Fukuzawa stares for another few seconds, before nodding. “…Consider your termination rescinded.”

With that, he leaves. Haruno lets out a huge sigh of relief: going against Fukuzawa is always scary, even though she knows he’s just worried about her safety.

But now that she thinks about that… “Hey, Naomi, you’re the only other clerk. Did he try to fire you too?”

“He didn’t even bring it up with me,” Naomi says, sounding mystified. “This is the first I’ve heard of it being too dangerous for the clerks to stay around.”

Not surprising. Even Fukuzawa should be scared of what happens if you try to separate the Tanizaki siblings.
