Of course Chuuya has read Hori Tatsuo’s work. Just because he writes strictly poetry doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy reading novels, and Hori’s stories are undoubtedly masterpieces. He distinctly remembers reading “The Wind Has Risen” while in bed at the sanatorium, and tearing up a little.

But Hori isn’t one of the authors Chuuya holds dearest to his heart like Miyazawa Kenji. He isn’t a family friend like Mori Ougai, or someone Chuuya knew in life like Dazai and Ango. And of course, there’s no way he’s gotten attached to Hori since his summoning in the library - he’s only been here for an hour, if that.

When he sees that sword flying towards Hori, all Chuuya can think is, “He looks so young.”

Of course he knows that whatever Hori looks like now, he lived to be years older than Chuuya. But as he thinks that, his body is already in motion.

It’s really very simple. Chuuya just can’t watch a child die.
