Notes:

Solomon the Lesser, he called himself. A good name, a name with history, but not one he could ever truly live up to. An impossible goal to always be striving towards.

The true Solomon is a man with kind eyes, and it burns Avicebron to look at him even through a mask. He bows his head. “My king.”

“Solomon,” he says, warmly. Avicebron does not hate his Latinized name, from the years when his masterpiece was attributed to Christian or Muslim philosophy, but it makes his breath catch to be addressed properly. “There is no need to stand on ceremony with me.”

“I am unworthy to address you as an equal. No, after all that I’ve done, I don’t have the right to address you at all.” Guilt is always a weight on him, but now it is crushing.

“’A broken and contrite heart, God will not despise.’” Solomon sets a hand on Avicebron’s shoulder. “You have repented, pursued acts of lovingkindness and truth, and forsaken your sin. You have returned to the right path.”

“But-”

“Or,” Solomon says with a small smile, “are you saying that you understand Jewish law better than I do?”

Of course not. The thought is ridiculous. Avicebron swallows the lump in his throat. “…Your wisdom is as great as the stories say.”

Solomon’s smile turns a bit wry. “I had a friend who incinerated humanity in pursuit of a better world. Let’s say I have reason to encourage repentance.”
