Notes:

Dumas is many things - a novelist, a playwright, a travel journalist, a cookbook author. Of all the writers in the world he holds himself in the highest esteem, and his egotism is well known.

But he will graciously admit to the areas he is weak in, and one of those is poetry. Never got the hang of it.

So when someone else is reading poetry - good poetry - even he will shut up and listen.

Poetry time has a new attendee.

It had just been Nursery Rhyme who'd wanted to hear Avicebron read his works in the authors' room, at first, and he'd obliged mostly to avoid her nagging. Then Jack and the little Jeanne started showing up, which was… fine. Three children listening to him aren't any worse than one.

But lately he's noticed that Dumas puts his pen down and stops to listen instead of continuing to write. That's embarassing in the way that the children hanging on his words aren't. Nursery Rhyme is writing, not a writer - it's not the same as having the attention of a master of the craft.

Somehow Dumas must be able to tell that he's staring through his mask, because he gives Avicebron an exaggerated wink, and Avicebron trips over his next word.
